Have you accidentally deleted some very important files that you had on your PC or smartphone? It happens to everyone, do not worry, however, know that the last word is not yet said. PhotoRec E TestDisk (Windows / MacOS / Linux)
PhotoRec and TestDisk are two data recovery software, both free and open source, which come in pairs. The first is a very easy to use data recovery software that supports all major file systems and all storage drives (hard disk, SSD, microSD, USB devices, etc.); the second is also a data recovery software but it works only from the command line and is especially indicated in situations where you want to recover lost partitions or you want to make bootable disks that are no longer so.
The two software are multi-platform. This means they work on Windows, macOS and Linux, but sadly PhotoRec comes with a ready-to-use graphical interface only in its Windows version. On macOS and Linux it should be used from the command line.
Having made these necessary clarifications, let's see in more detail how PhotoRec works (the program that, between the two, I recommend you try). After downloading the software and extracting it to a folder of your choice (it does not require installations to work), launch the executable qphotorec_win.exe.
In the window that opens, use the drop-down menu located at the top to choose the drive from which to recover data, then select its primary partition (or in any case the partition from which you intend to recover deleted files) and presses the button KATEGORIEN, to select the folder in which to save the data recovered by the program.
At this point, metti il segno di spunta accanto alla voce Whole, click the button File Formats, to select the types of files to be recovered and presses on Search, to start the data recovery. All files found by PhotoRec will be automatically saved in the folder you indicated by clicking on the "Browse" button.
For more information on PhotoRec and how it works, see my tutorials on how to recover deleted files from mobile phones in which I explained how to use the program to recover data from hard drives and microSD.
Recuva is one of the programs to recover deleted files most used in Windows. It is free and is available in two versions: a "traditional" one that provides a standard installation procedure (and offers the download of additional software, such as CCleaner which is made by the same manufacturer) and a portable one that, instead, can be used without carrying out installation procedures. The program supports all devices: mechanical hard drives, SSDs, microSDs, smartphones, tablets, MP3 players, USB sticks etc. and all file systems and is extremely easy to use. In fact, it allows you to choose, through a convenient wizard, the types of files to be recovered and the drives to be scanned.
To go into more detail, after starting Recuva you have to click on the button forward and you have to choose the types of files to recover: all files, images, music, papers, video, compressed files o e-mail. Next, you have to choose whether to recover data from all drives connected to the PC (choosing the option I'm not sure), gives multimedia cards or iPods, from the folder of papers, from basket, from CD / DVD or from one specific location to be indicated using the appropriate button.
After this step too, he presses the buttons forward e starts and wait for the list of recoverable files to be shown. The files marked with the green dot are those that can be recovered at 100%, those marked with the yellow dot can be recovered but are probably damaged, while those with the red dot next to them cannot be recovered. Once you have selected the files to restore, click on the button Recover, select the folder to export them and that's it.
If the normal scan does not return satisfactory results, you can try enable deep scan by selecting the appropriate item in the initial Recuva procedure. For more info take a look at my tutorial on how to recover files deleted from the recycle bin where I told you in more depth about the software.
Disk Drill (Windows / MacOS)
Disk Drill is one of the best data recovery applications available on Mac. Unfortunately it is not free, it costs 79 euros, but you can download it for free and test its functionality (in the sense that the files that can be recovered but cannot be exported are displayed ). There is also a version of the software for Windows, but personally on Microsoft systems I tend to recommend other solutions, such as those we have analyzed previously.
Disk Drill's operation is quite intuitive. After starting the program, uncheck all the options that are proposed to you, click on the button Continue and enter the MacOS admin password. Then click on the button Recover located next to the name of the drive from which you intend to recover deleted files and wait for the scan to complete.
At this point, select the type of file you want to recover (eg. Documents, Images o Video) and scroll through the list of all the files that Disk Drill was able to find. To preview the files, click on theeye placed next to their names.
For more detailed instructions on how Disk Drill works, see my tutorial on recovering data from damaged hard drives in which I have dealt with the program in depth.
MiniTool Power Data Recovery (Windows/macOS)
Another data recovery software that is definitely worth considering is MiniTool Power Data Recovery, which is compatible with both Windows and macOS. It is available in two versions: a free one that allows you to recover up to 1GB of data and a paid one ($ 69, for personal use only) which, on the other hand, has no such limits.
The program is really very intuitive. On its home screen there are five options: Undelete recovery, to recover deleted files; Lost partition recovery, to recover lost partitions; Digital media recovery, to recover photos and videos from external drives; CD/DVD Recovery, to recover data from damaged diskettes e Damaged partition recovery, to recover data from damaged partitions.
After scanning the drive from which to recover data, to restore the files, all you have to do is put the check mark next to their icons, press the button Save and choose a folder to export them to.
To underline the availability of a bootable version of MiniTool Power Data Recovery that can be copied to a floppy disk or a USB key and used on those systems that no longer boot correctly.
If you need to recover deleted files from an Android smartphone or tablet, you can rely on DiskDigger: it is a data recovery application that works directly from Android and allows you to restore both files deleted from the device's memory and from the microSD (in the case of devices that support memory expansion). It is available in two versions: a free one that allows you to recover only images in JPG and PNG format and videos in MP4 format and a paid one (€ 3,37) that also allows you to restore documents, applications, compressed archives and music tracks. In both cases, for the application to work properly, you need to root Android.
After downloading DiskDigger on your device, grant it root permissions by pressing the appropriate button that appears in the center of the screen and refuse the transition to the Pro version of the application (if you are using the free one). At this point, choose to scan the internal memory device or microSD, put the check mark next to the types of files you want to restore and press on OK, to start scanning the drive.
When the scan is complete, select the files to be recovered, press the button Recover which is located at the top and choose whether to export the items to a cloud storage service, whether to auto-send them via email or whether to store them on the smartphone / tablet memory (not recommended). If you need more info on how DiskDigger works, see my guide on how to recover deleted files from Android in which I told you in more detail about the app.
