Before telling you what the programs to read DVDs which in my humble opinion you would do well to take into consideration, it seems only right to make a small clarification: unfortunately most of the PC (potable and fixed) currently on the market and all Poppy recently marketed are lacking of a DVD player "Standard".
This means that in order to play DVDs, an external disk drive is required. If this is your situation and you want to receive some "tips" about brands, models, prices and compatibility of USB DVD players, I refer you to reading my buying guide focused specifically on external burners (which, of course, also act as readers).
DVD Player and Windows Media Player
Stai using Windows 10, the first of the DVD reading programs I want to invite you to consider is the Windows DVD player: it is a paid application developed by Microsoft (costs 14.99 euros) designed specifically to read DVD on Windows 10 (as the latest operating system of the Redmond company does not have a default DVD player). However, you can download a free trial version that works for 7 days, which, however, it should be noted, does not allow the playback of videos: it only serves to evaluate the compatibility of the software with the device.
To download the free trial of the application on your PC, connect to the relevant section of the Microsoft Store Online, pig sul sul bottone Buy and, in the window of Microsoft Store "Real" that appears on the desktop, presses the button Test. When installation is complete, insert the DVD into the player connected to the computer, click on the notification CD Drive (X 🙂 [Title] Select to choose the operation for DVD movies that you see appear in the lower right part of the screen and, from the panel that opens, click on the item Play DVD - DVD player.
Then wait for the compatibility check to be completed and, if successful, proceed with the purchase of the program following the guided procedure that is proposed to you. After completing the purchase, you can start playing the disk “normally”. Find all the commands you need to manage this in the lower part of the program window.
Se, invece, stai using Windows 7 or an earlier version of the operating system, you can use Windows Media Player to play your DVDs. Find the program already pre-installed on your computer and it starts automatically when a DVD is inserted into the player connected to the PC. If not, you can start WMP from the Start menu and double-click the disc name that you find in the section Multimedia catalog of the program. If Windows Media Player does not appear to be installed on your PC, find out how to remedy the problem by reading this tutorial.
DVD Player on MacOS
Stai using a Poppy? If so, I'm happy to let you know that MacOS integrates a default software to read DVDs that are inserted into the player connected to the Mac: it is DVD player, an application developed directly by Apple for its users, included at no cost in all versions of macOS and very easy to use.
To use it, all you have to do is insert the disk you want to play into the CD / DVD player connected to your Mac and wait a few moments for the DVD Player to start automatically. If this does not happen, you can "manually" start the player by clicking on its icon (the one with the remote control su macOS High Sierra and earlier versions and the one with the DVD player su macOS Mojave and later) that you find in Spotlight. Alternatively, you can invoke DVD Player using Siri or dalla cartella Applications> Utilities from the Mac.
When playback of the disc is started, DVD Player opens to full screen and the various commands are visible on a special bar at the bottom (which disappears automatically after a few seconds of inactivity of the mouse). If you want to exit full screen mode, press the key e on the keyboard.
VLC (Windows / MacOS)
Have you ever heard of VLC? No? Strange, it is very famous! In any case, there is no problem: let's fix it immediately. It is a renowned and appreciated media player, totally free and open source in nature compatible with Windows, macOS and Linux. It has an essential interface that is very easy to use and, above all, support for all major video file formats (including DVDs, of course). Note that the videos can be viewed without the need for external codecs, as the software already includes everything that is needed for playback, both locally and online.
To download VLC to your computer, visit the program's website and click on the button Download VLC. mpv (Windows / MacOS / Linux)
Another DVD player I want to suggest you consider is mPV: it is a free, open source and working resource on Windows, macOS and Linux. Thanks to it, it is possible to easily reproduce movies on your computer and DVDs. It has a minimal interface with only the essential commands for playback and, moreover, thanks to the support for decoding via GPU and its internal optimizations, it allows you to view in an extremely fluid way even those videos that may present some problems in other players.

For those who don't just want a program to read DVDs but an all-in-one media player capable of playing almost any type of video file in the world, as an alternative to the solutions mentioned at the beginning of the article, there is PotPlayer. It is a free software only for Windows that offers a wide range of advanced features, not found even in the most famous paid players, which allow you to edit video and audio in real time during playback.
