You need to send some very "heavy" files to your friends and, before proceeding in this sense, you have seen fit to zip them, or compress them with a suitable software. Having never had an operation of this kind, however, you wouldn't mind receiving some clarification on which ones ZIP programs use for that purpose. Well, if that's the case, there is no doubt: you've come to the right place at the right time!
In the next paragraphs of this guide, in fact, I will have the opportunity to explain how to best use some of the main compression software among those available. There are an infinity of them: some are free, others are paid (usable, however, for short trial periods) and others are available online, in the form of Web applications. If you are interested in this, then in the last part of the tutorial I'll list some mobile apps suitable for the purpose.
So, are you ready to get started? Yup? Very well: make yourself comfortable, take all the time you need to concentrate on reading the next paragraphs and, more importantly, try to put into practice the "tips" that I will give you. There is nothing left for me to do, except wish you a good read and a big good luck for everything!
Free ZIP Programs
Let's start this guide by getting to know some free ZIP programs intended for Windows and macOS, which, in addition to being free, are also very simple to use.
Windows and MacOS Default Functions
Before guiding you in installing third-party programs, I suggest you think about using Windows and macOS predefined functions to compress and decompress ZIP files. You probably already know them, but either way, let me refresh your memory.
If you own a PC Windows, For compress of files or folders, you simply have to select those of your interest, right click on the selection made and choose the items Send to> Compressed folder give the menu check if you press.
For decompress a ZIP archive, on the other hand, you have to right click on it, select the entry Extract everything from the context menu and, in the window that opens, click on the button Extract. Alternatively, double-click on the archive of your interest and drag and drop the files in it to any position.
It was used MacOS, you can count on a function similar to that available on Windows to create and open compressed archives. Now I'll explain how to use them.
For compress of files or folders, select the elements of your interest, right-click on the selection made and click on the item Collapse [N] items present in the context menu.
For decompress a ZIP archive, on the other hand, double-click on it and wait for the extraction procedure to be completed (it should take a few moments).
The extracted files will be saved in the archive source folder.
7-Zip is one of the best programs for managing compressed archives on Windows. It is free, open source and offers the possibility to zip and unzip files in an extremely easy and fast way, even allowing you to create encrypted archives (as I explained to you in this other guide).
To download it to your PC, connect to its download page and click on the item Download located at the version of Windows installed on your PC (32 bit o 64 bit).
Once the download is complete, start the file .exe you have obtained and, in the window that opens, first click on the button Yes and then on the buttons install e Close, to complete the setup.
At this point, to zip files or folders with 7-Zip, all you have to do is select the elements of your interest, right-click on the selection made and choose the items 7-Zip> Add to archive ... from the context menu. In the opened window, then select the type of archive you want to create (eg. Zip) via the menu Archive format and choose his compression level from the appropriate menu (eg. Ultra , to compress the archive to the maximum).
Finally, type the name to be assigned to the archive in the field Archive nameclick on your button OK And that's it. At the end of the procedure, the ZIP archive you obtained will be in the same location where the source folder or file was located.
Of course, 7-Zip is also useful for unzipping ZIP archives: to do this, just right-click on one of them and select an item from 7-Zip> Extract here o 7-Zip> Extract files (to extract the files, respectively, to the current location or to another location) and that's it.
A Poppy, you can take advantage of Keka: a free program that allows you to open and create compressed archives in ZIP format and in many other formats. Its user interface, very simple and intuitive, makes it suitable even for those who are not very familiar with the world of information technology. The software, as already mentioned, is free, but I would like to point out the possibility to purchase its paid version (3,49 euros) from the Mac App Store, in order to support its development.
To download Keka for free, go to its program download page, click on the button Download vx.x.xx. Once the download is complete, open the package .dmg you got and move Keka to the folder Applications say macOS.
Next, right-click on the Keka icon in the Applications folder and select the item apri, twice in a row, so as to "bypass" the restrictions imposed by macOS on applications from non-certified developers (you have to do it only at its first start).
At this point, in the window on the left, select the format ZIP from the drop-down menu at the top right, choose the compression method that you prefer to use (using the appropriate adjustment bar) and use the other menus and items available to customize the program settings according to your needs.
Next, drag the files or folders you want to compress into the Keka window and drop the items in question at the wording Release here to compress: in this way, a compressed archive will be created, which will be saved in the same location where the source files and / or folders were.
To decompress an archive with Keka, on the other hand, all you have to do is drag it into its main window and, when you see the wording Release here to extract, drop it there. The extracted files are saved in the source archive folder.
Programs for ZIP and RAR
Would you like to try software that can create and open ZIP and RAR archives, even for a fee? Then take a look at the following programs for ZIP and RAR, available for both Windows and macOS.
The first solution I recommend you try is WinRAR: a very famous compressed archive manager that allows you to create and open ZIP and RAR files in a rather simple way. It costs 36,54 €, but it is possible to test it for free for a trial period of 40 days, at the end of which the program continues to work but showing with some insistence the banners that advise the purchase of its license and preventing the creation of encrypted RAR archives.
To download WinRAR on your computer, go to its official website and press the button Pick up, which is located for the version of Windows installed on your computer (to 64 bit o to 32 bit), in the section Latest version - xx.
When the download is complete, open the file .exe you downloaded and, in the opened window, click on the buttons Yes e Install. Then select the file types you want to automatically open with WinRAR and finally click on the buttons OK e Close, but will conclude the setup.
At this point, select the files and folders you want to compress, right click on one of them and choose the item Add to an archive from the menu that opens. In the next window, select the option ZIP o RAR from the section Archive format and choose the compression method that you prefer to use from the appropriate menu.
To unzip an archive, instead, right click on it, select the item Extract the files from the context menu and, after indicating position desired output, update mode e overwrite mode desired, click on the button OK which is located at the bottom. If, after right clicking on the archive of your interest, you select the item Extract here from the context menu, the files will be extracted to the current location.
Also WinZip can be useful to you to create and open ZIP and RAR archives, both on Windows that of MacOS. Like WinRAR, this software also has a fee: it costs 36,54 €, but you can use it for a trial period of 22 days.
To download WinZip on Windows, go to its official website and click on the button TRY IT FOR FREE. When the download is complete, open the file .exe you have obtained and click on the buttons Yes e forward (twice in a row). When the installation of the program packages is finished (which should happen in a few minutes), click the button end, to close the window.
Now, choose to activate the trial version of WinZip by clicking on the button Use the evaluation version, and then press the button Close, I will continue.
To create a compressed archive with WinZip, select the files or folders of your interest, right-click on the selection made and choose the items WinZip> Add to zip archive give the menu check if you press.
Alternatively, if you prefer, open the program directly, use the sidebar on the left to select the files of your interest and click on the button Add to zip, located at the bottom left, to carry out the operation.
To extract files from a compressed archive, instead, drag it to the main WinZip window, click on the button Decompressed his located on the right and that's it. Alternatively, if you have associated WinZip with ZIP archives, you can open them by simply double clicking on their icons.
You use a Poppy? Then let me tell you how to download and use WinZip on macOS too. First, go to this page and click the button DOWNLOAD TRIAL. When the download is complete, open the package .dmg you got, drag the program icon to the folder Applications say macOS, fai clic destroy your di essa and select the voice apri twice in a row (this only needs to be done on its first run and serves to "bypass" Apple's restrictions on software from non-certified developers).
In the window that opens, click on the button Agree, go to the menu WinZip > Preferences application (top left, in the macOS menu bar) and, after clicking on the tab File Types, select the file types to be opened automatically with WinZip (eg. ZIP, RAR, etc.). By doing so, just double-click on the icons of ZIP, RAR, etc. files. to open them with WinZip.
To create a new archive, on the other hand, after starting WinZip, click on the button (+) Add placed at the top of its main window and decide whether to compress files or folders coming from your Mac (From this Mac) or from a cloud storage service among those supported (eg. iCloud Drive, dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Etc.).
Select, therefore, the files or folders to include in the archive, click on the button Save as located on the right and decide whether to save the archive locally or on one of the outdated cloud storage services.
To decompress an archive, you can also act in this other way: after opening WinZip, drag the compressed archive of your interest into the main application window, select (by holding down the key cmd) the files you actually want to extract, click the button Unzip at the bottom left and, after choosing whether to save them locally or on one of the available cloud storage services, confirm the operation by clicking on the button Unzip Present on the menu if you press.
Programmi Via ZIP Online
You are going to zip and unzip files and folders online? It is possible to do this too: to succeed, just use solutions such as of ezyZip. It is a free web application that allows you to create and open compressed archives in a very simple way, directly from the browser and without installing any additional plugins.
Just a couple of clarifications before describing its operation: ezyZip allows you to select only single files (therefore not in groups) and, moreover, it does not allow you to open encrypted compressed archives. All clear? Well, then let's take action!
To use ezyZip, go to its home page, click on a tab between Collapse o Decomprimi (depending on the operation you want to carry out), click on the button Choose file and select the files you are going to zip or unzip.
Next, click on the buttons Compress files e Save the zip file, if you have chosen to compress files, or click on the button buttons Extract e Save (l'icona del floppy disk placed next to each file of your interest), to extract the files present in a compressed archive.
ZIP Programs for Android and IPhone
We conclude this tutorial with some programmi ZIP via Android e iPhone or rather, with some app which will surely be useful for compressing and decompressing files and folders from your smartphone and / or tablet.
- WinZip (Android / iOS) - this is the mobile version of the famous program that allows you to manage ZIP archives from a computer (if you remember, I told you about it a little while ago in one of the previous chapters of the guide). In its free version it allows you to compress files saved on the device and open ZIP and RAR files, including encrypted ones. To create encrypted archives, however, you need to switch to its paid version, which costs 5,49 euros.
- Fillet (iOS) - is an app included "standard" on iPhone and iPad that allows you to manage files and folders. Among its many functions, it also offers the one to extract ZIP archives, but not the one to create them.
- Documents by Readdle (iOS) - if you have an Apple device, chances are you already know this app: it is a file manager developed by Readdle, which allows you to open and create ZIP archives in a few taps.
If you want to learn more about the use of these and other apps to manage ZIP files, I refer you to the deepening in which I explain in detail how to zip on Android and iOS.
