If you dedicate me a few minutes of your precious time, in fact, I can explain to you, in no time how to zip a video. I already anticipate that, contrary to what you may think, it is an extremely simple operation to perform and for the realization of which it is absolutely not necessary to be a computer wizard.

Another possible solution to this could then be to compress your movie using ad hoc software, in such a way as to reduce its weight and, if necessary, also change the format. Create a ZIP File with a Video

Stai using Windows o MacOS and would you like to know what tools to use to be able to create a ZIP file containing your video? Then go ahead and read. In fact, below you will find those that in my humble opinion represent the best instruments in the category and the relative instructions for use.

Default Archive Manager (Windows)

If you are using Windows, the first among the useful tools for zip a video which I suggest you consider is the default compressed archive manager of the OS. You probably weren't aware of it but you should know that Redmond operating systems include a special tool “as standard” thanks to which, in fact, it is possible to compress and decompress files in ZIP format.

To use it for your purpose, all you have to do is select the video file in relation to which you are interested in going to act, right-click on it, choose the option Send to from the menu that opens and then the wording Folder included. By doing so, a compressed archive in ZIP format will be created in the same location as the source file and containing the video you chose to compress.

Compression Utility (macOS)

Also on macOS there is a default tool for managing archives: Compression Utility. Thanks to it it is possible to create ZIP files starting from video, audio, PDF files etc. and decompress the main compressed archive formats.

To use it, locate the video file you want to work with, select it, right-click on it and select the option Collapse from the context menu that opens. Once this is done, a compressed archive in ZIP format will be immediately generated in the same location as the source file, with the video you wanted to zip inside.

7-Zip (Windows)

Also 7-Zip is an excellent tool to consider to be able to zip video files (and not only). In case you have never heard of it, it is a famous software for, in fact, zipping movies, images and various documents in a simple and fast way. It supports ZIP, 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR and WIM formats in the compression phase and all the main formats of compressed archives for reading (ZIP, 7Z, RAR, ARJ, CAB, CHM etc.). It's completely free and it's only for Windows.

To use it, go to the program's official website and click on the link Download post at the entry 64-bit x64 o 32-bit x86 (depending on the version of Windows installed on your PC). When the download is complete, open the file .exe obtained and, in the window that appears on the desktop, click on the buttons Yes, install e Close to complete the 7-Zip setup.

Now, locate the video file on your PC that you want to zip, right click on it, select the item 7-Zip from the context menu that opens and choose the option Aggiungi all'archivio.

In the window that will open on the desktop, select zip as the type of archive to create from the drop-down menu Archive format and indicate the compression level you want to use from the drop-down menu Compression level. Finally, click on the button OK and your ZIP file will immediately be generated in the same location as the source file.

If you deem it necessary, you can also add a password to the ZIP file, in order to protect it from unwanted access. To do this, before starting the creation of the compressed archive, type the secret word you want to use in the appropriate fields attached to the section Cryptography (bottom right).

WinRAR (Windows)

Still if you are using Windows, another tool that I invite you to consider for zipping a video is WinRAR. It is, in fact, one of the most renowned compressed archive managers on the market. It allows you to create ZIP and RAR files starting from various types of files, including movies, and to open practically any kind of compressed archive (RAR, ZIP, 7-Zip, ACE, CAB, GZip, TAR etc.). It is paid (it costs 36,54 euros), but you can also download a free version that at each start shows a notice inviting you to purchase a license within 40 days (after which the program continues to work but shows the invitations purchase of the license in a more insistent way).

To download WinRAR on your PC, go to the program's website and press the button Pick up that you find corresponding to the 64-bit or 32-bit version of the software for Windows (depending on the variant of the operating system you are using) that you find at the top of the section Latest version.

When the download is complete, open the file .exe obtained and, in the window that is shown to you on the desktop, click on the buttons Yes e Install. Then select the types of files you want to open automatically with WinRAR and click on the buttons OK e Close to complete the setup procedure.

At this point, locate the video on your computer that you want to include in a ZIP file, right-click on it and select, from the context menu that opens, the option Add to an archive.

In the window you now see appearing on your desktop, select the option ZIP at the section Archive format, choose the compression method you prefer from the drop-down menu Compression method and click on the button OK. The generated ZIP archive will be saved in the same location as the source file.

If you want to protect the ZIP file with a password, press the button before starting the creation of the ZIP file Set Keyword and type the secret word you want to use in the appropriate fields attached to the further window that opens.

Keka (macOS)

Do you own a Mac and are looking for an alternative to the default utility to zip a video? Then I strongly advise you to consider Keka. It's free, it allows you to create ZIP archives but also 7z, TAR, GZIP, BZP2, DMG and ISO and to open compressed archives in various formats. It has a nice user interface and works with a simple drag-and-drop. Note that it is eventually available in a paid variant (costs € 3,49) that can be purchased from the Mac App Store to support and reward the work of developers.

To download Keka, go to the application website and press the button Download vx.x.xx. Once the download is complete, open the package .dmg obtained and move theKeka icon in the folder Applications of macOS. Next, right click on it and select the item apri from the context menu, in order to open the program going to circumvent the limitations that Apple imposes on applications from non-certified developers (an operation that must be performed only at the first start).

Once the Keka screen is displayed on the desktop, to create a compressed archive containing your video do this: select the format ZIP from the drop-down menu at the top right, adjust the related settings through the menus and items available and drag the video you want to compress into the program window, in correspondence with the writing Release here to compress. A compressed archive in ZIP format will therefore be generated in the same location as the source file. Et voila!

Programs to Zip a Video

As I told you at the beginning of the article, to easily share your videos you can also choose to compress them by using special software capable, in fact, of reducing the size and if necessary also changing the format. If this interests you, then below you will find the best ones programs of this type that I think you would do well to consider.

HandBrake (Windows / MacOS / Linux)

Among the best software to compress video files on Windows and macOS (as well as on Linux), I point out HandBrake. It is a free and open source program capable of flawlessly fulfilling the purpose in question, in such a way as to allow you to play your movies on various devices without problems.

To download HandBrake on your PC, visit the program's website and, if you are using Windows, click on the link Download (64 bit) located under the icon with the windows flag. Once the download is complete, open the file .exe obtained and, in the window you see appear on the screen, click on the buttons Yes e Next (twice in a row). Next, press on the buttons install e Finish to complete the setup and start the program using the collegamento which was added to the desktop or via the Start menu.

Se, invece, stai using MacOS, cheap you link Download (Intel 64bit) located under theFinder icon, on the program website. Once downloaded, open the package .dmg ricavato e trascina l 'HandBrake icon in the macOS Applications folder. Then, right click on it, select the item apri from the context menu and then click on the button apri, in such a way as to open the application, however, going around the limitations of Apple towards non-certified developers (an operation that must be performed only at the first start).

Now, regardless of the operating system used, select the video you want to compress using the window that opened on the screen, press the button Presets at the top right and choose, from the menu that opens, the compression profile of your interest or the target device.

If you deem it necessary, you can make further customizations to the movie (e.g. adjust the resolution, audio settings, etc.) by modifying the settings attached to the tabs in the center of the window.

Finally, click on the button KATEGORIEN located at the bottom, select the location on your computer to save the output file and click the button Start Encode/Start located in the upper left, so as to start the compression process.

Video to Video Converter (Windows)

Video to Video Converter is a renowned free software for Windows operating systems only through which compressed movies can be generated, by selecting special ready-to-use profiles, to be played on the most diverse types of devices. It is very easy to use and requires no installation.

To download it, go to the official website of the program, press the button Download and on the voice Click here to download ZIP archive. When the download is complete, extract theZIP archive proceeds and runs the executable vv.exe contented to the internal suo.

In the window that now appears on the desktop, select theItalian as language to be used for the program interface using the appropriate drop-down menu and presses the button OK. Then drag the video to be compressed in the white box in the center of the Video to Video Converter window and choose the conversion profile of your interest.

If you deem it necessary, you can also change the resolution and quality of the final file by selecting one of the options in the drop-down menus Quality e Video size, in the right sidebar. Then press on the button OK, indicate the location on your PC in which to save the final file by clicking on the icon folder (bottom right) and start the compression process by pressing the button Converted (up).

Online Services to Zip a Video

Don't want or can't download new programs to your computer but still need to compress one or more video files? If the videos in question are not particularly thought out and if you have an active and functioning Internet connection at your disposal, you can perform the operation in question by relying on the appropriate online services. Which? Those you find indicated and explained in the following lines.

Media.io

The first of the useful Web services that I invite you to consider is Media.io. This is a video compressor that can be used directly via the Web, at no cost and very easy to use. It supports all popular video formats and is fast enough too.

To try it, go to the home page of the service and drag the video you want to compress into the white box on the left. Alternatively, click the button [+] and select the video file "manually".

Then serve the drop-down menu Output size to adjust the compression settings, change (if you see fit) the resolution and output format using the drop-down menus Resolution e Output format and click on the buttons Compress e I Agree.

Wait for the video to be uploaded and processed, then click on the button Download to download the final file to your PC. It was easy, wasn't it?

VideoSmaller

As an alternative to the solution described in the previous lines, I invite you to consider VideoSmaller. This is another free online service, easy to use and capable of flawlessly fulfilling the purpose in question. Note that it only supports MP4, AVI, MPEG, MOV formats with a maximum weight of 500 MB.

To use it, go to the home page of the service, click on the button Search, select the movie on your computer that you want to compress and, if you intend to apply a low level of compression, check the box next to the wording Use low compression level (best quality).

If you want to reduce the resolution of the movie, choose the option you prefer from the relative drop-down menu (otherwise leave the option selected Don't climb). If you then want to remove the audio, check the box next to the item Remove audio from video.

To conclude, click on the button Upload video placed at the bottom. At the end of the process, you will be shown how much it was possible to reduce the size of the movie and you can proceed with the download of the compressed file by clicking on the link next to the item Completed Present at the top of the page.

App to Zip a Video

And on smartphones and tablets? Is it possible to zip a video? Of course! To do this, you just have to resort to the use of some special ones app, like the ones I have reported to you below. Try them now, there are both for Android that for iOS.

  • AndroZip (Android) - free app developed by the AVG software house that allows you to open, create and manage ZIP archives in an extremely simple way. It can also open other compressed archive formats and includes support for encrypted archives.
  • Video Compress (Android) - no cost app that allows you to compress video files by selecting the final quality level. Note that it also allows you to intervene on other types of files. It's free, but additional functions can be unlocked via in-app purchases (at a cost of 2,9 euros).
  • Documents by Readdle (iOS) - renowned file manager for iOS that also allows you to open and create ZIP archives in a very easy way. It's free.
  • Smart Video Management (iOS) - free app thanks to which you can share large videos on messaging apps, social networks or by email.
