How to Zip a File with Winrar

WinRAR is one of the most famous software for the management of compressed archives. It allows you to open many compressed archive formats (RAR, ZIP, 7-Zip, ACE, CAB, GZip, TAR and many more) and to create new archives, both in RAR and ZIP format, starting from any type of file or folder .

As you probably already know, WinRAR is only available for the Windows operating system (there are software implementations for other platforms, but they are not as complete and functional as the one for Windows) and is distributed in the form of trialware: you can download it for free and at every start displays a notice inviting you to purchase a license within 40 days. In reality, the software continues to work even after 40 days, but it shows the invitations to purchase in a more insistent way and does not allow you to take advantage of some advanced features, such as secure encryption with AES-256-bit logarithm.

In short, if you were looking for an effective but at the same time easy to use program to create compressed archives, I would like to say that you have found what you need! If you agree, then, I wouldn't waste any more time and see how to zip a file with WinRAR using all the most important functions of this famous software. I assure you that this is a much simpler operation than you imagine.

Zipping a File with WinRAR on Windows

To learn how to zip a file with WinRAR, you must first connect to the WinRAR website and click on the button WITHDRAW placed in front of the item WinRAR per Windows Xp/2003/Vista/2008/7/8/10 a 64 bit if you use a 64-bit version of Windows or in front of the entry WinRAR per Windows Xp/2003/Vista/2008/7/8/10 a 32 bit if you still use a 32-bit version of Windows to download the program to your PC.

When the download is complete open, double clicking on it, the file you just downloaded (WinRAR-x64-xxit.exe) and first click on Yes and then on, Install OK Close to finish the WinRAR installation process.

Mission accomplished! Now you can not only open all major compressed archive formats (by simply double clicking on each file icon), but also create new ZIP and RAR archives easily. Let's see together how.

All you need to do to create a ZIP file with WinRAR is to right click on the file (or files) you want to add to your archive and select the item Add to an archive give the menu to compare.

In the window that opens, put the check mark next to the item ZIP, type the name you want to assign to the archive in the appropriate text field and click on the button OK to start creating a ZIP archive containing the files you have selected.

By default, the archive is saved in the same folder as the source files but you can also select another destination by clicking on the button Shop by Department. Using the drop-down menu Compression method you can also set the compression level to use to create the zip file: Storage, Faster, Fast, Normal, Good or Best. But remember: the higher the compression level, the longer the archive creation process will take.

Do you want to create password-protected ZIP archives so that their content cannot be viewed by those who do not have permission? No problem, WinRAR allows you to do this too. Start the procedure to zip a file as we have just seen together and, before clicking on the button OK and start the creation of the ZIP file, press the button Set keyword which is located at the bottom right.

At this point, type the password you want to use to protect your archive in the fields Enter the keyword Re-enter the keyword to verify in the window that opens and click on OK twice in a row to create your encrypted archive. It was easy, wasn't it?

Password protected ZIP files can be opened normally with WinRAR and any software suitable for the purpose, but require the entry of the password as soon as you try to view or extract one of the files contained in them.

Another very interesting function of WinRAR is the one that allows you to create multi-volume archives, that is ZIP archives broken into several parts (in order to make it easier to distribute or archive large files).

To create a multi-volume archive, follow the procedure I explained above and, before starting the creation of your ZIP archive by clicking on the "OK" button, set the options relating to the division of the archive in the drop-down menu Divide into volumes by size which is at the bottom left. By doing this you can set the number of KB, MB or GB after which the archive should be split into a new volume.

Once you have a multi-volume archive, to extract the files from it, just group all the volumes that compose it into the same folder and open the zip file that does not have numbers at the end of its name.

If you want create a RAR file instead of a ZIP file, all you have to do is follow the procedure I just showed you to zip a file with WinRAR and put the check mark next to the item RAR instead of next to the ZIP entry in the WinRAR screen.

Zipping a File with WinRAR on Android

As noted above, WinRAR is only available for Windows but some less complete software variants are also available for other software platforms. Among these variants I would like to point out RAR for Android which allows you to create RAR and ZIP files starting from any file or folder on the operating system of the green robot.

To download RAR on an Android smartphone or tablet, all you have to do is search for the app on the Play Store and start its installation by pressing the appropriate button. When the download is complete, start RAR, select the files and / or folders to zip and press the icon with the book and the + symbol which is located at the top right.

In the screen that opens, put the check mark next to the item ZIP, type il name that you want to assign to your archive in the appropriate text field, press the button Shop by Department to select the folder in which to save the file and presses on OK (bottom right) to start creating the archive.

If you want, you can also protect the archive with a password by pressing the button Set keyword, or adjust the compression level, by going to the tab Advanced and expanding the drop-down menu Normal compression.

By choosing the RAR option instead of the ZIP one on the initial archive creation screen, you can create a RAR archive instead of the ZIP one.

WinRAR is an excellent software for managing compressed archives, but not the only one available on the market. Indeed, there are many valid alternatives to WinRAR that are available for various software platforms and in many cases are even free.

7-Zip (Windows)

7-Zip is the best free WinRAR alternative. It allows you to open all major compressed file formats and to create ZIP and 7z archives. It does not allow you to create archives in RAR format, but I would not make a drama of it since it is completely free and otherwise it is really flawless!

If Keka is to your liking, support its development by purchasing the paid version on the Mac App Store for € 2,29.

Please note: if you are not interested in adjusting the compression parameters of ZIP files, you can use the function of creating compressed archives included "standard" in macOS by right clicking on the items to be zipped and selecting the item Collapse from the menu that appears. If you want to create files in RAR format, try RAR Archiver which costs € 1,99.

ES File Explorer (Android)

If you have an Android device and RAR doesn't suit you, you can create ZIP files with ES File Manager, a great free file manager that allows you to view, manage and create various types of files with ease.

To create a ZIP archive with ES File Manager, select the latter by making a long "tap" on the first of them and then placing the check mark on the others, presses the button Other located at the bottom right, select the item Collapse from the menu that appears and indicates the preferences relating to the archive to be created in the box that opens. Easier done than said!
