You don't have to be a tech genius to have the latest version of Kodi on your device. Thanks to my tips and the simple instructions I am about to give you, you will be able to update Kodi both on computer that of TV Box, smartphone e tablet without losing anything and above all in a very short time. Are you ready to get started? Perfect: sit quietly in front of your computer, TV or portable device, take some free time and, guide in hand, get to work. At this point I just have to wish you good work!
Create Backup of Settings
As I explained to you a little while ago, it can happen that an update of Kodi, especially if you switch from one main version to another (for example from Kodi 16 to Kodi 17), leads to the loss of personal settings. In reality it almost never happens but, to make the transition to subsequent versions of Kodi as painless as possible, it is a good idea to create a backup of personal settings to be restored then once the update has been carried out. Don't worry, it's not difficult, and I'll show you how to do it in two ways: the first using a Kodi add-on that you can download in no time, the second by copying the folder containing all the program's settings by hand.
Let me tell you, before starting, that the procedures in Kodi are identical both on a TV Box or Android smartphone / tablet, and on a computer (Windows / macOS / Linux); the only difference is in the creation of the folder: on the computer you can do it as usual, while on Android I will explain how to do it using a special file manager. I also recommend that you keep the remote control your TV Box: you will definitely need it!
Backup Tramite Add-on
This is definitely the most effective method to create a backup of Kodi settings before an update. All you have to do is download the appropriate add-on from the available extensions, configure and run it; first create a folder to save your backup in: if you are using the computer, create a new folder called BackupKodi in an easily accessible place (for example on the desktop). If you are using Android instead, download the File Manager app from the Google Play Store and then install it.
Open the newly installed app, then tap the button Main Storage if you want to save your backup on the device's internal memory, or on SD Card if you want to save it to the memory card. Now tap the button ⋮ that you find at the top right, presses on the item New and then on the voice Folder; give the new folder its name BackupKodi, finally presses up OK.
Now open Kodi and, using the side menu, move to the button Add-on and click on it, then press the button Download, click on the folder Add-on Programs and then Backup. If you have Kodi 16, move right until you find the button System, poi cheap Submit or tap the button Settings. Move to the button Add-on, press enter or tap on it, select the item Install from repository, then select the item Add-on Programs and, again, the voice Backup.
Press the button Install and wait for a check mark (or the text Qualified, if you use Kodi 16); click on the item again Backup e pulsing sul pulsating Run. In the window that appears, press the button Open Settings, then in the “Remote path type” text box press the arrow at the bottom until the item appears Select path. Now press on the item Select remote path and, thanks to the manager, select the folder created earlier (for example, to access the folder on the desktop, you need to navigate to C: Users YourUsername Desktop BackupKodi), finally presses up OK.
At this point, click on the item again Backup, by pressing the button Run, by pressing the button Backup; wait for the process to complete: the backup is ready in the folder of your choice. Remember, you'll need it after updating Kodi!
Do you find that the backup procedure with the special Kodi add-on is too cumbersome and you prefer to rely on dear, old copy-paste? Then this section is right for you! Here I show you the Kodi folder that contains all your personal settings: what you need to do is copy it and keep it in a safe place, to restore it after the installation of the new version of Kodi.
Let's start first from computer; if you are using Windows, press the keys on the keyboard Windows (the one with the Windows flag) e R, in the window that appears write % APPDATA% tax and presses Enter; if you use instead MacOS, activate the display of hidden files as I explained to you in my guide, then open the Finder, from the top menu click on the item vai and on the voice Start, then open the folders library, Application Support and finally Kodi. If you use instead Linux, open a terminal emulator from the list of programs, type the command xdg-open ~/.kodi/ e pigia Submit.
At this point, copy the folder userdata (right click on the folder and select the entry Copy) and paste it in a safe place (for example the desktop, an external disk or a network device, by right clicking and selecting the item Paste from the menu that opens).
It was used Android, download the File Manager app from the Google Play Store, install and open it. Then click on the icon Main Storage, then on the folders Android, date, org.xbmc.kodi, files and finally .kodi. Now, do it long tap on the folder userdata (or select it with the remote control and press the button to access the context menu, if you are using a TV Box) and touch the button Copy che trovi in basso.
Now, tap on the icon in the shape of House that you find at the top, press the icon Main Storage (or icon SD card, if you want to save the folder on the memory card) and press the button paste that you find below. Remember where you copied the folder - you'll need it later!
Now that you've backed up your settings, it's finally time to upgrade Kodi! Before doing this, especially if you are about to perform a version switch, I recommend that you restore the skin program default: this is because, if the skin is not compatible with the next version, Kodi will crash and you will have to uninstall and reinstall it again.
Another very important thing, try not to do "big" version jumps, otherwise you may have problems: to understand, if for example you use Kodi 15 do not go directly to Kodi 17, but first update from Kodi 15 to Kodi 16 and only then repeat the procedure to update from Kodi 16 to Kodi 17. If you need it , you can find the old versions of Kodi for Windows on this page or those for macOS on this one.
To change the skin, press the small button Settings ((I.e.), then on the button Interface Settings, then on the voice Skin and infine your voice Estuary (if you are from a computer) or Estouchy if you use a touch device or a TV Box; press on Yes in the next window. If you're using Kodi 16, swipe right until you find the button Systempoi prize Submit or tap on the item Settings. Press the button Appearance, then on the voice Skin and finally on the button Confluence. Press on the button Yes in the next window.
At this point you can proceed with the actual update: if you are using the computer, download the latest version of Kodi suitable for your operating system by connecting to the download page and clicking on the icon of your operating system. You have several download options - I recommend that you choose the version Release of Kodi, download it by clicking on the blue button DOWNLOAD in correspondence with the text "Release".
Wait for Kodi to download to your computer, then if you have Windows or Linux double click on the file you just downloaded and press the buttons Next, then I Agree, Next and again Next. In the window that asks you whether to overwrite the current version of Kodi installed, press the button Yes and finally press the button install. Wait for the installation procedure to be complete, click on the “Run Kodi” box to check it and then click on Finish: now you can enjoy the new version of Kodi just installed. With MacOSinstead, you just have to open the downloaded file and drag and drop Kodi in the folder Applications, then launch it directly from Launchpad.
With Android everything is even simpler and less problematic: if you have active automatic updates, you definitely have Kodi updated to the latest version, otherwise you can update it directly from Google Play! Go to the appropriate section dedicated to Kodi (or run a search in the store and tap on the Kodi icon), then press the green button Update and wait for the update to complete.
Update Kodi with APK
While this does not happen in general, it can happen on some TV Box there are problems proceeding with the update through the Google Play Store, due to the customizations of the operating system or, again, because the Google Play Store is not installed at all. This is not a problem, as Kodi makes APK for manual app update on both architectures ARM a 32 bit, be on ARM a 64 bit; for this reason, before proceeding, you need to find out the architecture of the device to install the correct version on Kodi.
To do this, open Kodi and presses the small button Settings ((I.e.), then click on the icon System Information and then on the voice Hardware; in Kodi 16, on the other hand, you have to swipe right until you find the button System, move down until the item is selected System Info and finally select the item Hardware on the left. From the summary window you can understand which version of Kodi to install: if the wording appears Aarch32 you need ARMV7A, if instead the wording appears Aarch64 you need ARMV8A.
Now that you have discovered the version of Kodi that suits your TV Box proceed as follows: connect to the Kodi download page for Android, look at the line where the word Release appears and click on the ARMV7A button to download the 32-bit Kodi APK, or on the ARMV8A button to download it in 64-bit. Once this is done, all you have to do is follow my guide on how to open APK files to unblock installation from unknown sources and install the update.
Android may warn you that the APK will replace the currently installed version of Kodi - click the button OK or on Yes (depending on the version of Android you are using) and proceed smoothly.
Reset the Settings
You have finally updated your Kodi and you can't wait to enjoy it to the full! But wait a moment, can't you find all the settings you had available in the previous version anymore? Rest assured, at the beginning of this guide I explained how to create a Kodi backup just to face this possible situation with serenity and it's time to put your previous work into practice. I tell you that, also this time, the procedures in Kodi are identical both on Android TV Box and on computer (Windows / macOS / Linux).
Restore Via Add-on
Now that you have finally managed to update Kodi, it's time to open it: if all your settings have been saved you can be satisfied but, if instead you find yourself with a completely empty Kodi, it's time to restore the backup you created in previously with the add-on. Using the side menu move to the button Add-on and click on it, then press the button Download, click on the folder Add-on Programs and then Backup. If you have Kodi 16, move to the button System, poi cheap Submit or tap the button Settings. Select the button Add-on and press enter or tap on it, select the item Install from repository, then the voice Add-on Programs and, again, the voice Backup.
Then press the button Install and wait for a checkmark (or the inscription Qualified, if you are on Kodi 16); click again on the item Backup and then presses the button Run. In the window that appears, presses the button Open Settings, then in the "Remote path type" text box press the dart down until the item appears Select path. Now press on the item Select remote path and, thanks to the manager, select the backup folder you created earlier (for example C: Users Username Desktop BackupKodi), finally presses up OK. Now press the button Restore and click on the most recent backup available: wait for the procedure to be completed and, to finish, restart Kodi.
If you did the manual backup and Kodi was unable to save your settings, this is the part of the guide you need to use to restore. All you have to do is put the previously created folder back in its place! Let's start with computer; if you are using Windows, press the key combination on the keyboard Windows (the one with the Windows flag) + R. In the window that appears, write % APPDATA% tax e pigia Submit; if you use instead MacOS, activate the display of hidden files as I explained to you in my guide, then open the Finderclick sulla voce vai present in the menu bar (top) and select the item Start from the latter, then open the folders library, Application Support and finally Kodi. If you use Linux, open a terminal emulator from the list of programs, type the command xdg-open ~/.kodi/ e pigia Submit
Move to the path where you previously saved the old folder userdata, copy e paste it in the Windows Explorer, Finder or Nautilus window; when the operating system asks you whether to overwrite existing files, say yes. Restart Kodi and here's the surprise: all your settings are in place!
If you use instead Android, download (if you don't already have it) the File Manager app from the Google Play Store, install it and open it. Pajamas icon Main Storage, then on the folders Android, date, org.xbmc.kodi, files,.kodi. Now do it long tap on the userdata folder (or select it with the remote control and press the button to access the contextual menu, if you are using a TV Box) and touch the button Copy that you find below. Now tap on the icon in the shape of House that you find at the top, press the icon Main Storage (or icon SD card, if you want to save the folder on the memory card) and press the button paste che trovi in basso.
