How to Transfer Files from Android to Mac

Have you just connected your Android smartphone to a Mac but the device is not recognized? Does its icon appear neither on the desktop nor in the Finder sidebar? Don't panic, I assure you that the solution to the problem is around the corner.

To connect an Android smartphone or tablet to your Mac, all you have to do is install a small free software called Android File Transfer (Android File Transfer in Italian), which allows you to view all the files contained in the device's memory and transfer them on your computer, or vice versa. The software is very light and takes a few moments to be installed; all you have to do is download it to your Mac, copy it to the "Applications" folder of OS X and that's it!

At the end of the procedure you can transfer files from Android to Mac (or vice versa) simply by connecting the smartphone / tablet to the computer and waiting for the Android File Transfer to start. At that point you will be free to manage all the data on the device memory and copy them from one part to the other. If necessary, you can also synchronize photos with your Mac using the Apple Photos application. For more information read on, you will find everything explained below.

Copy Files from Android to Mac with Android File Transfer

As just mentioned, the first step you need to take is to download the application Android File Transfer on your Mac. Then connect to the program's website and click on the button Download now you see in the center of the screen.

When the download is complete, open the file androidfiletransfer.dmg, select the icon Android File Transfer that is inside and copy it into the folder Applications in OS X.

Mission accomplished! You should now be able to connect your Android device to the computer without any problems, but first make sure that the device settings is enabled MTP mode for file transfer via USB. To do this, turn on your smartphone (or tablet), go to the settings Android (the gear icon found in the menu with all the apps installed on the device) and select the item Memory from the screen that opens.

At this point, press the icon (...) located at the top right, select the item USB computer connection from the box that opens and put the check mark next to the item Multimedia Device (MTP).

Now everything should really be ready. Then connect your smartphone or tablet to the Mac using a USB cable, start Android File Transfer and wait a few seconds for the software to show you the contents of the device memory. If a warning appears that the software is from an unidentified source (i.e. it was downloaded from the Internet), click apri to start it. It is a warning that appears for all applications not downloaded from the Mac App Store, nothing to worry about.

Once you see the list with the folders and files on the device you can transfer files from Android to Mac with a simple drag-and-drop, that is by selecting the file icons with the mouse and dragging them to the folder you prefer.

The same goes for data transfer from Mac to Android: to copy a file from your computer to your smartphone / tablet just select its icon and drag it to the Android File Transfer window. That's all. To select multiple files at once, use the combination cmd+click.

When you're done transferring files to or from your Android device, close Android File Transfer and unplug the USB cable. Very simple. The next time you connect your smartphone or tablet to the Mac, the application will start automatically.

Transfer Photos from Android to Mac

Would you like to synchronize the photos of your Android smartphone or tablet with the Mac? No problem. All you need to do is enable Camera Mode (PTP) in your device settings and use one of the photo importing applications in OS X: Photos o Image capture.

To activate the camera mode on Android, go to settings system (the gear icon found in the menu with all the apps installed on the device) and select the item Memory from the screen that opens. Then press the icon (...) located at the top right, select the item USB computer connection from the box that appears and put the check mark next to the item Camera (PTP).

At this point, connect your smartphone or tablet to the Mac and start the app Photos (if it has not already started by itself). Then select the tab Import located at the top right and choose whether to import all the photos on the device to the Mac by clicking on the button Import all new items located at the top right, or select only the photos (and videos) of your interest and transfer them to your computer by clicking on the button Import selected xx. If you want to automatically delete photos imported to your Mac from Android, put the check mark next to the item Delete items after import.

Alternatively, you can also import photos from Android via the app Image capture located in the folder Other of the LaunchPad. To use it, select your smartphone / tablet icon from the left sidebar; then choose whether to copy all the photos on the device to the Mac by clicking on the button Import everything located at the bottom right, or whether to select only the photos (and videos) of your interest and transfer them to the computer by pressing the button Import. To select multiple photos at once use the combination cmd+click, while to choose the folder in which to import photos and videos use the drop-down menu Import into which is at the bottom left.

Transfer Files from Samsung Devices to Mac

Do you have a Samsung smartphone or tablet? Then know that you can synchronize the data on your device with the Mac, create backups and update the device software using the free Smart Switch application produced by the Korean giant.

To download Smart Switch on your computer, connect to its official website and click on the button Download for Mac OS that you find in the center of the page. Then open the file SmartSwitch4Mac_xx.dmg you just downloaded on your Mac and launch the package SmartSwitchMac.pkg present inside.

Nella finestra che si apre, click on your button Continue three consecutive times, accept the conditions of use of the program by clicking on the appropriate button and continue by clicking first on Continue and then Install.

Finally, type the password of your user account on OS X (the one you usually use to access the system) presses the button Install software and finish the setup by first clicking on Continue Installation and then Restart. The Mac will restart and you can sync data between your Android device and computer using Smart Switch.

Please note: in case you need to uninstall Smart Switch in the future, do not drag the application icon to the trash as you normally do with programs for OS X. Open the package instead dmg you downloaded from the Samsung website and launch the file Uninstall present inside.

Transfer Files from Android to Mac Wirelessly
