How to Split Large Files

Many times it can be useful to split a large file into several smaller and lighter files. If you agree with my statement, it is probably because several times you have tried to send a file to your friend as an attachment to an email but you have not been able to do this. Unfortunately, this is the case: email providers impose limits on sending large files as attachments and it is not possible to send and receive them directly via email.

In this case, the solution I want to offer you is precisely to divide the attachment into smaller parts to be sent, one by one, with different emails to overcome the MB limit imposed by the email provider. This is an alternative solution to the one I proposed in my guide on how to send heavy attachments but it is still just as effective.

So if you want to know more about this topic because the question is of interest to you, then this guide is for you. Sit comfortably, take a few minutes of free time and follow the instructions I wrote in this tutorial step by step. However, I recommend that you do not overdo the file division: you don't want to clog your friend's mailbox! Seriously, I wish you a good reading and a good job.

HJ-Split (Windows / Linux)

Among the programs that can help you divide a large file into smaller ones, you can turn your attention to HJ-Split. This program is totally free and can be used on both Windows and Linux operating systems. You can then split a large file into other smaller parts, so you can easily send or share. Its interface is really simple and it will take you a little while to understand it.

If you are interested in this program, then you will need to connect to the official HJ-Split website and reach, from the right menu, the download section related to your operating system. Then click on the entry HJSplit for Windows to download the installer for your Windows operating system; you can also download the Linux version, via voice HJSplit for Linux. In this guide I will cover the download and installation of the Windows version.

Then click on the relevant download item and then click on the wording that you find by scrolling the page a bit. You can choose between the different links proposed (location 1, location 2 o location 3). After downloading the file, extract the ZIP archive to any location on your Windows computer and launch the file . EXE. Then click the button Yes, if a window of the Account control user.

After starting the program, from the main interface click on the button Split and by clicking on the button Input File. Then select the file you want to split into several parts and then select the destination folder by clicking on the button Output file.

You will then have to select the size of the volumes that will be created by typing a value of your choice in the field Split file size. Then select the unit of measurement, using the drop-down menu on the side, choosing between Kbytes e Mbytes. When you have set what is required, click the button Start, so as to begin the file splitting process.

When the splitting process is complete, click the button Ok, which will confirm, through a window, that the operation was successful.

Then navigate to the output folder you had chosen as the destination for the entire splitting process. You will see many files of the same size you set named nomefile.est.number. All these files can then be sent by email or other means, without the worry of sending a single large file.

However, the possibility of restoring the file is limited to the use of the same program. Furthermore, all the parts must be placed in the same folder, so that the program can extract them.

Then open the program again, click the button Join and select the file indicating the value 001 (ext.filename.001). Then select the Output folder where to extract the file and click on the button Start. Then wait for the process to complete and go to the destination folder to find the file extracted from the volumes.

Split & Concat (macOS)

A similar solution to the previous software I told you about is Split & Concat. This program, available for free, is only available for macOS operating systems. Split & Concat allows you to divide a file of any size into volumes, starting from a value you set. Its operation is simple and does not require any particular skills to be successful in the operations of use.

Go to the software website first and click on the wording on the right Download. There are different versions based on the version of macOS installed on your computer. After downloading the installation file SplitandConcat_XXX.dmg, drag its icon into the folder Applications say macOS.

Now right-click the program icon and click apri, so as to circumvent the application execution restrictions imposed by Apple. The program will then be started, with a minimal and very intuitive interface.

Click on the button Divide and set the value that each single volume must have, taking care to choose between the two values as well MB o KB. Once the value has been entered, click the button Ok and select the file to divide. You will then receive a message confirming the actual division of the files into many others of smaller size, compared to the value you indicated above.

If you want to adjust some settings, you can reach the appropriate panel via the button options.

When you want to reunite the files, just open Split & Concat again and click the button Merge. You will then have to select one of the volumes created, so that the file inside them will be extracted and be available for use again.

7-Zip (Windows)

On computers running Windows, you can count on the capabilities of the 7-Zip software. This allows you to open and manage archives, such as those with RAR, CAB, GZIP, 7Z or ZIP extension. You can also create new archives by setting the division into smaller volumes.

So if you are interested in using this program, download it for free on your Windows computer, via the official website. After reaching the site, click on the entry Download, corresponding to the architecture version of your computer: then choose 64-bit x64 if you have a 64-bit or 32-bit x86 computer.

Now open the file just downloaded, in order to start the installation procedure. Then click the button Yes, in the window of User Account Control Windows. Then click the button install and as soon as the installation is complete, click the button Close.

To split your large file into many smaller files, just right click on it and then choose the item 7-Zip > Aggiungi all'archivio.

A 7-Zip window will then appear where you will have to select all the parameters for creating your compressed archive. The essential elements that I point out to you are the choice of format, the level of compression and the division into volumes (Subdivision into portions).

Then click on the drop-down menu that will appear by clicking on the item corresponding to the wording Archive format and select the format you prefer, such as the format 7Z o ZIP. Choose then the Compression level among those indicated and then enter the size value of each single volume.

When you have set all the necessary parameters for creating your volume archive, click on the button Ok to begin the process of compressing and splitting the files.

Keka (macOS)

On operating systems with macOS, it is possible to download a software that has the heart of 7-Zip and that is its source code (p7zip) for compression.

The software free I want to tell you about is Keka: this will not only allow you to manage your compressed archives, such as RAR, ZIP or 7Z, on your macOS operating system, but it will also allow you to split your files. If you are interested in downloading it to your computer, then you can reach the official website.

Then open the link I gave you and click on the green button Download Keka, which you find on the left. After the download is complete, open the installation file Keka-XXXX.dmg, remembering to drag the program icon into the folder Applications macOS, just as you are told by the installation window.

To start creating your archive to split large files on your computer, click on the program icon, which you will find in the Launchpad of macOS. Then select one of the formats in the top bar of the program, to be chosen from 7z, Zip, Tar, Gzip or Bzip2.

Now select corresponding to the item Division, one of the formats available in the drop-down menu. If the default size does not meet your needs, enter the megabyte value that best suits your needs in the text field. Depending on the format chosen, it may also be possible to choose the compression method, in order to reduce the total size of the file. Then drag the file (or more files) into the Keka interface to create your compressed archive, according to the parameters you set.

The final result will be an archive divided into several parts that contain the information of the files you have added. However, remember that to extract the contents of the newly created archive, you will need to own all the files that were generated, otherwise the extraction may be impossible.
