Surfing the net with your Mac you stumbled upon a movie in WMV format, you downloaded it to your computer but… surprise! There really doesn't seem to be a way to open it with QuickTime Player. Well, that's normal, the WMV extension is proprietary to Microsoft and video files of this type were designed primarily to be opened with Windows Media Player.
Given the situation, I guess you are wondering how to watch WMV on Mac. If this is indeed the case, however, you have no reason to be alarmed. To succeed in your intent you just have to resort to the use of some special software (but not only!) Which can be easily found directly on the net. Which? Read the instructions below and you will find out immediately.
So tell me, are you ready to find out how to view WMV on Mac? Yes? Very well, take a few minutes of free time, sit comfortably in front of your trusty Apple-branded computer and concentrate on reading this guide. I bet that in the end you will be able to tell yourself more than satisfied and that if necessary you will also be ready and willing to provide all the necessary explanations to your friends in need of receiving a similar tip.
Software Via Vedere WMV Su Mac
The first software I suggest you turn to to see WMV on Mac is VLC. Haven't you ever heard of it? It seems strange to me, in any case let's fix it immediately. It is one of the most complete and famous multimedia players in the world. It's free, multi-platform (it's available not only for Mac but also for Windows and Linux), open source, and reads all major video file formats without the need for external codecs.
To watch WMV on Mac with VLC, the first step you need to take is therefore to download and install the player on your computer. To do this, click here so that you can immediately connect to the official website of the program and click on the orange button Download VLC present at the top.
Then wait a few moments for the VLC download on your Mac to be started and completed and click on the installation package (eg. vlc–2.2.4.dmg) that was downloaded to the folder Download macOS (if you have not changed the default settings of the web browser you are using) then drag the icon of the player attached to the window that opened on the desktop on the folder Applications.
Now start VLC on your Mac by turning on the Launchpad and clicking on the player icon, going to the folder Applications and double-clicking the VLC icon or accessing Spotlighttyping vlc and clicking on the first result in the list. Then click the button apri in response to the question “VLC” is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? and wait for the program window to be visible on the desktop.
Once this step has also been carried out, to be able to see WMV on Mac with VLC, there is nothing left to do but locate the "offending" video on your Apple computer and drag it to the VLC window, in the part of the player window where there is written Release media here.
Alternatively, you can open the WMV format file you are interested in viewing by clicking the button Open media ... placed in the right part of the VLC window and selecting the movie you want to play from the Finder window that is shown on the screen.
After following these steps, you can finally "enjoy" your WMV movie directly from the VLC window.
If necessary, use the appropriate commands located in the lower left part of the player window to move forward (the button with double arrow to the left) and back (the button with double arrow to the right) the video, to start playback (the Play), pause it (button Pause) or stop it altogether (the button with a square), or to organize a playlist (the button with the three lines). In the lower right part of the program window you will find the volume adjustment bar and a button with two arrows to enable full screen view.
Another great software that can be used to view WMV on Mac is Miro. It is a free, multi-platform and open source multimedia player that allows you to play all major video and audio file formats as well as download and view movies from various sources. In short… it's a real godsend.
To watch WMV on Mac with Miro, the first step you need to take is to download the program on your Apple computer. To do this, click here and press the green button Download located in the center of the screen.
Then wait a few moments for the download of Miro on your Mac to be started and completed, then click on the installation package (eg. look.dmg) that was downloaded to the folder Download macOS (if you have not changed the default settings of the web browser you are using) and drag the icon of the player attached to the window that opened on the desktop onto the folder Applications.
Now start Miro on your Mac by turning on the Launchpad and clicking on the player icon, going to the folder Applications and double-clicking the VLC icon or accessing Spotlighttyping I look and clicking on the first result in the list. Then click the button apri in response to the question “Miro” is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? and wait for the program window to be visible on the desktop.
At this point, clicca sulla voce Video located in the left sidebar of the program and drag the file in WMV format you want to view on your Mac in the multimedia player window, then wait a few moments for the playback to start. Then press the button Play appeared next to the preview of the movie. Simple isn't it?
Alternatively, you can open the WMV file you want to play on Mac by clicking on the entry Fillet located in the upper left part of the menu bar, click on the item apri and then select the video file from your Mac.
If you prefer, you can also import your own files (MKV and otherwise) from your computer. To do this, click on the item Fillet located in the upper left part of the menu bar, brings the cursor to Import and then indicate, depending on what your needs and preferences are, if you prefer that the program locate all your multimedia files saved on Mac, if you want Miro to search for files to play in a specific folder, if you want to start monitoring a certain path or if you prefer to manually select files.
When playback has started, use the buttons located in the lower left part of the window to rewind (the button with the double arrow to the left), stop (the button with the square), pause (the button with the double vertical line), play (the Play) or forward (the button with the double arrow to the right) video. In the lower right part of the player you will find the volume adjustment bar and the commands for random playback (the button with the crossed arrows) and the continuous one (the button with the two circular arrows).
Didn't the software for watching WMV on Mac attract your attention in a particular way? Are you looking for some alternative solution? In this case, instead of trying to watch WMV on Mac, you could convert these videos into other video files that can be played without particular problems on macOS, for example to MP4 or AVI.
To do this, you just have to resort to the use of special conversion software, like the ones I suggested in my tutorial on video converters.
If the multimedia players that I proposed in the previous lines did not convince you and if the idea of converting your movies to be able to see WMV on Mac does not appeal to you in a particular way, you can also succeed in your sense by resorting to the use of Flip4Mac, a paid plugin (costs just under 10,00 €) which can allow you to play movies in the offending format directly from QuickTime Player and the browser.
Alternatively, there would be the VLC web plugin to be downloaded and installed separately (by copying the VLC Plugin in the folder Internet Plug-ins macOS) but it still doesn't work perfectly. I therefore suggest that you take this into consideration in view of further developments.
