How to Restore Whatsapp Conversations

Have you purchased a new smartphone and would like to recover all the WhatsApp conversations you had on the other phone? Are you going to format your phone and, before completing the operation, do you want to create a backup of your chats on WhatsApp? Very well. I am happy to inform you that you have come to the right place at the right time.

With today's guide, we'll see together how to restore WhatsApp conversations in the most diverse circumstances: in case of switching from one smartphone to another, after the accidental deletion of some chats or in case of formatting the device. Whatever the situation you are currently in - unless it's a truly hopeless case - you should be able to recover all your messages without any problems.

To achieve your purpose you can take advantage of the backup function included directly in WhatsApp, which allows you to save data locally or - better still - on the cloud, in order to restore them as soon as necessary without having to struggle with memory cards, file manager and so on. The only requirement for everything to go well (besides the backup) is to use a phone that has the same number as the one from which the recovery files come. Here is all explained in detail.

Restore WhatsApp Conversations on Android

If you are using an Android smartphone you have two options for restore WhatsApp conversations: the first is to use the online backup system on Google Drive, the second instead involves the use of backup files hosted on the phone memory. I recommend the first one, which does not require particular efforts and works completely automatically, but if for some reason you do not use Google Drive and / or want to recover conversations prior to the last backup generated by the application you can also use manual "backups ".

WhatsApp Backup and Restore with Google Drive

Thanks to Google Drive it is possible to archive WhatsApp messages on the cloud (i.e. online) and restore them on any device associated with your Google account and the same number of the phone from which the backup originated.

To configure backups on Google Drive, start WhatsApp, press the button [...]collocato in alto a destra and seleziona la voce Settings from the menu that opens. Then go up Chat> Chat backup, select the item related to Backup su Google Drive and choose one of the options available for automatic data saving: daily to make an automatic backup of WhatsApp every day, weekly to create a backup every week, monthly to create a backup every month or Only when I tap "Back up" to disable automatic backups.

Once you have made your choice, press the button  Back up and wait for a backup copy of your conversations to be created. The chats will be stored both on the cloud and on the phone memory. If you want to include videos in the backups, put the check mark next to the item Include videosHowever, beware the videos could take up a lot of space and make the process of backup and restore conversations longer (as well as take up a lot of storage space on Google Drive).

The process of restoring messages is very simple. All you have to do is install (or reinstall) WhatsApp on a smartphone associated with the same phone number and the same Google account used to generate the backup and follow the initial configuration procedure of the app. After verifying your number, WhatsApp will automatically detect the presence of a backup on Google Drive and will offer you to restore it: press the button Restore And that's it.

Offline WhatsApp Backup and Restore

Now let's deal with the offline recovery mode, the one that involves the use of files crypt12 saved by WhatsApp on the smartphone. The generation of these files occurs automatically based on the app's backup settings: by default they are created every day but the backup can also be weekly or monthly.

To change the frequency of WhatsApp backups, open the application, press the button [...] collocato in alto a destra and seleziona la voce Settings from the menu that appears. Then go up Chat> Chat backup and choose one of the options available in the menu Backup su Google Drive (whose settings also affect offline backups). Pressing on the option instead Back up your chats you can start creating a “manual” backup.

Backups are stored in the Home WhatsApp Databases folder of the phone (or in the sdcard WhatsApp if the device supports memory expansion via microSD) and are renamed as follows: msgstore- [data] .1.db.crypt12 where instead of [data] there is the date to which the backups refer (eg. msgstore–2016–07–05.1.db.crypt12 is a backup created on July 5, 2016).

To have WhatsApp restore the messages included in one of these files, you need to rename it to msgstore.db.crypt12 and reinstall the application. To rename the backup files you can use a file manager such as ES File Explorer, which you can find for free on the Google Play Store.

When installation is complete, start ES File Explorer, presses onhamburger icon located at the top left to invoke the app's sidebar and select the item Home. Then head to the folders WhatsApp> Dabatases and search for the most recent backup files (or those you intend to restore to your smartphone).

At this point, keep your finger pressed on the name of the backup to be renamed, press the button Rhinomine located at the bottom right and change the file name to msgstore.db.crypt12. If there is already a file with this name in the folder, delete it by holding down its icon and “tapping” the button Delete.

You are now ready to restore WhatsApp. If you have not already done so, then proceed to uninstall the application from your smartphone and reinstall it. Don't know how to uninstall WhatsApp? No problem, I'll tell you how to do it right away.

Call up the screen with the list of all the apps installed on the phone (it's called drawer), keep your finger pressed on the WhatsApp icon, drag it towards the basketthat appears at the top and confirms the uninstallation of the app. Alternatively, head over to the menu Impostazioni> App and first presses the WhatsApp icon and then the button Uninstall

Please note:: if a warning from ES File Explorer appears asking you if you want to delete the folders associated with WhatsApp, answer no (Cancel), otherwise the backup files will also be deleted!

Once uninstalled, open the Play Store and download WhatsApp again. So wait for the application to be installed, start it and normally follow its initial configuration procedure. After verifying your phone number, WhatsApp will automatically detect the backup file and ask you if you want to restore the chats: answer yes, by pressing the button Restore, and that's it!

To prevent the Google Drive backup from being detected instead of the local one, connect to this web page and remove WhatsApp from applications that have access to Google Drive. You can then allow the app to access the service again in order to take advantage of the cloud backup function.

Note: if you want, you can also copy WhatsApp backups to another smartphone by moving the file msgstore.db.crypt12 in the Home WhatsApp Databases folder of the latter and reinstalling the application.

Restore WhatsApp Conversations on IPhone

Restore WhatsApp conversations on an iPhone is tremendously simple, just rely on the backups saved automatically by the application on iCloud (Apple's cloud storage service).

To configure the frequency of WhatsApp backups on your "iPhone by", open the application, go to the tab Settings located at the bottom right and select the items Chat> Auto Backup from the screen that opens. Then move to Automatic backup and choose whether to activate automatic backups on a daily, weekly, monthly basis.

Once this is done you can start a manual backup of the conversations by returning to the screen Settings> Chat and tapping the button Back up now. On the same screen, you can also move up ON the levetta Include videos and activate the backup for the videos sent / received on WhatsApp (option that lengthens the backup and restore times of messages and leads to the consumption of more space on iCloud).

Now let's move on to the restore procedure. To restore WhatsApp conversations on an iPhone, just install (or reinstall) the application on a phone with the same phone number and the same Apple ID as the one from which the backup originated. As on Android, even on iOS WhatsApp automatically detects backups on the cloud and proposes their restoration after verifying the number.

If you want to reinstall WhatsApp on your "iPhone by" hold your finger on the application icon and wait for it to "dance". Then press on ”x” that appears at the top left and accepts the removal of the app.

At this point open theApp Store, search for WhatsApp Messenger and reinstall it. Once the download is complete, then launch the application and follow its initial setup procedure as normal. After verifying the number, WhatsApp will ask you if you want to restore the chat backups from iCloud: press on Reset Chat History to accept and that's it.

Please note: Unfortunately, iCloud does not allow you to restore conversations prior to those of the most recent backup. If you want to restore an older backup you can try resetting the iPhone and restoring it to an earlier date using iTunes or iCloud backups, but the result is not guaranteed. You can find all the instructions on how to recover WhatsApp iPhone conversations in this way in the tutorial I dedicated to the topic.

Restore WhatsApp Conversations on Windows Phone

WhatsApp for Windows Phone does not yet support the cloud backup function, this means that you can only work with backup files saved locally from the application. As if this were not enough, it is possible to transfer backups from one phone to another only if both devices support microSD, otherwise the WhatsApp files are saved on a hidden memory area (isolated storage) and cannot be move to another smartphone.

Having made this "painful" premise, let's see how to activate the backup function in Windows Phone and how to make the most of it. To start a backup in WhatsApp for Windows Phone, start the application, press the button [...] che si trova in basso a destra e seleciona la voce Settings from the menu that appears. In the screen that opens, go to Chat and call, "tap" on the item backup and wait for a backup copy of your conversations to be created.

At this point, if you are using a device with microSD support, move the card to the phone on which you intend to restore the WhatsApp messages, install the application and during the initial configuration procedure of the app confirm that you want to restore the messages from the backup (pressing the button Restore. Obviously the phone must be associated with the same phone number used to create the backup.

If you don't have a Windows Phone with expandable memory, you can restore messages only on the same device. To do this, uninstall WhatsApp, download it again from the Windows Phone Store and accept the backup restore during the initial app setup procedure.

Restore Deleted WhatsApp Conversations

Would you like to restore WhatsApp conversations from a smartphone that has been formatted and on which the cloud backup service was not active? Well, I'm sorry to tell you but you have very little chance of recovering your chats.

If you want, you can try one of the programs that I recommended in my post on how to recover deleted files from your phone but, again, it will be very difficult to obtain noteworthy results.
