The first of the useful resources I want to tell you about is DivFix + +. It is a free program usable on Windows and Mac (as well as on Linux) capable of repairing .avi files that are corrupted in an incredibly simple and intuitive way. It is open source in nature, it is free and moreover it does not require installation. In short, try it now and you will see that you will not regret it.
To use it, the first thing to do is to download it to your computer. To do this, go to the download page of the program, click on the link Download DivFix++ that you find at the bottom and, in the new page that opens, presses the button Download. When the download is complete, extract the compressed archive obtained in any position on your PC, start the .exe file contained within it and press on Run.
If, on the other hand, what you are using is a Mac, once the download is complete, open the package in .dmg format obtained and drag the program icon into the Finder you see appear in the folder Applications of macOS. Next right click on the DivFx ++ icon and select apri twice in a row in order to start the application, however, going around the limitations imposed by Apple against the “blessed” developers.
Now, regardless of the operating system used, once the program window is displayed on the screen, click on the button add Files which is at the bottom to select the damaged video and then remove the index contained within the video file by unchecking the option Keep Original File e Cut Out Bad Parts and then pressing the button Strip index always placed in the lower part of the window.
At this point, there is nothing left to do but recreate the video by removing any damaged parts to have a smooth movie, without interruptions. To do this, click on the button Fix and wait patiently for the program to do its job.
At the end of the procedure, you will be notified of this and you can also view the report of the operation through the section Log Windows present on the right.
Video Repair (Windows/Mac)
I also suggest you take a look at Video Repair. It is a commercial program (usable in demo version at no cost, the one I used, with which it is possible to recover 50% of the damaged file), no-install and usable on both Windows and Mac which, as it implies the name itself allows you to repair, through a completely automated procedure, the corrupt videos of different formats (.mov, .mp4, .3gp) that use one of the following codec formats: avc1, mp4v, MPG2 / xdvc / xd5d / xd5e , jpg, icod, dvc / dvpp / dvhp and apch / apcn / apcs / apco / ap4h. It is very easy to use and is practically infallible (or almost). The only thing that needs to be taken into account is that to exploit it you need to have two videos made with the same video camera, otherwise… nisba!
The first step you must take to use it is to download the programs connecting to its website, scrolling down the displayed page and clicking on the button Download “Video Repair Tool (Mac & Windows) – By clicking this download link, you are accepting the license below!”. When the download is complete, extract the compressed archive obtained in any location on your computer, and double-click on the file gs.exe contented to the internal suo.
If you are using a Mac, right click on the file gs.app (or alone gs) always contained within the compressed archive obtained, click on the item apri in the context menu that you see appear and then presses on apri in response to the warning that appears on the screen in order to start the application by going around the limitations imposed by Apple against unauthorized developers. If you see an error message appearing while doing this, first right-click on the file mac_start.command always present in the compressed archive, select Open with and then click on Terminal (default).
Now, regardless of the operating system in use, select, from the window that appeared on the desktop, the English language for the interface (unfortunately Italian is not available) and click on OK for two consecutive times. Now that you see the Video Repair main window, click on the button Choose movie… at the top and select the damaged video file on your computer that you want to repair.
Then use the button Choose reference movie to choose an undamaged video file (therefore perfectly readable by various multimedia players) produced with the same video camera. To conclude and therefore to start the repair procedure, press the button Scan placed at the bottom. Depending on the size of the file, it may take several minutes to complete the operation.
The recovered video will be saved in the subfolder repaired present within the same path where the program in question is located. If at the end of the procedure the folder remains empty it means that it was not possible to repair the video submitted to the process.
I also point out, if you are interested in this, that before starting the recovery you can click on the button Options which is on the left-hand side of the program window and adjust all the parameters relating to the recovery procedure and the final file, for example the overall percentage of video to be analyzed, the format of the final file, etc.
