Use uTorrent it's really child's play: just give him the torrent file to download or click on a magnet link and that's it. However, in order for the program to do its job correctly and always go at maximum speed, you need to configure your router correctly.
To be precise, you need to enter the device configuration panel and open the door (i.e. the communication channel) that allows the software to accept incoming connections: this is a very simple operation, which takes a few seconds, but not everyone knows how to accomplish it. You don't even know it? No problem, there is always time to learn.
Read on and find out how to open uTorrent ports thanks to the information I'm about to give you. Whether you have a Windows PC or a Mac, it doesn't matter: if you follow the directions below, everything will run smoothly, I promise. But now enough chatter: let's roll up our sleeves and take action. There are so many files just waiting to be downloaded from the BitTorrent network!
Discover the Port Used by UTorrent
The first step you need to take is to locate the port used by uTorrent to accept incoming connections, i.e. to upload and download files from the Internet. This is a very simple operation.
If you use a PC Windowsavvia uTorrent, go to the menu Options> Settingsprogram (top) and select the item Connection from the window that opens (in the left sidebar). The port used by uTorrent is the one indicated in the field Port used for incoming connections.
If you use a Poppyinstead, start uTorrent, go to the menu uTorrent> Preferences (top left) and select the tab Network from the window that opens. The port used by the program is the one indicated in the field Inbound TCP port.
As you may already know, there is also a mobile version of uTorrent for Android devices. If you use it, you can set the TCP port to use under the Wi-Fi network by going to the ☰ menu > Settings of the same and filling in the field Incoming Port, located at the bottom of the screen that opens. If you need more information on how to use uTorrent for Android, please refer to my guide dedicated to the app.
Enter the Router Configuration Panel
For open the doors of uTorrent you have to enter the configuration panel of your router. Therefore, start the browser you usually use to surf the Internet (eg. Chrome o Firefox) and try to connect to the address 192.168.1.1 oppure all'indirizzo 192.168.0.1.
If neither of the two "coordinates" turns out to work, you can find out the exact IP address of your router using some tools included "standard" in Windows and macOS.
If you use a PC Windowsclick on your button Start (the flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen), look for the control panel in the latter and click on the first search result, in order to access the classic Windows control panel.
In the window that you now see on the screen, select the item Networkwhy are you cheating? network and sharing center and, finally, the name of the connection in use (eg. Ethernet). Finally, press the button Details and you will find the router address in the field IPv4 default gateway.
If you use a Poppy, go to instead System preference (the'gear icon located in the Dock bar) and click on the icon Network. Then select the name of the connection in use (eg. Wi-Fi) from the left sidebar, click on the button Advanced and go to the card TCP / IP. You will find the router address in the field router.
Once connected to the admin panel of the router, you will be asked to type a combination of username e password to access device options. Usually, this combination is admin / admin or admin / password (but for safety reasons it should be changed). If you can't find the right one, consult the router manual or try the suggestions in my guide on how to find the modem and router password.
Open UTorrent Router Ports
Now comes the most important part: you have to configure the router to open the port used by uTorrent and allow the software to communicate freely with the outside. Unfortunately each router has a menu structured in a different way, so I will not be able to be very precise in my indications, but in principle I can tell you that you have to identify the option for the port mapping (o port forwarding), start creating a new rule (or a new one virtual server) and fill in the form proposed to you as follows.
- Interior door / Initial door - the port number of uTorrent.
- External door / Final door - the uTorrent port number (the same value entered in the field relating to the internal / initial port).
- Port type / Protocol – TCP.
- Destination IP / Server IP address - the local IP address of the computer on which you use uTorrent. If you don't know what your PC's local IP address is, follow the directions in my tutorial on finding out your computer's IP address.
- Name / Description - a name of your choice to assign to the newly created rule (eg "uTorrent").
Once you have filled out the form, click on the button Save / Apply and that's it.
How do you say? Have you tried to follow my instructions but have not been able to find the right options to open the uTorrent ports on the router model in your possession? So let's do some practical examples regarding some of the most popular routers at the moment.
