The first program I invite you to consider is 7-Zip: it is a renowned no-cost software, of an open source nature and specific for Windows operating systems, which allows you to extract all the most popular compressed archive formats, including those in RAR format. It also allows you to intervene on password-protected and multi-volume files and to generate new compressed archives in various formats.
To download 7-Zip on your PC, visit the program's website and press the link Download at the top of the page, in correspondence with the Windows version in use on your PC (64 bit or 32 bit). Once the download is complete, open the file .exe obtained and, in the window that appears on the screen, presses the buttons in sequence Si, install e Close.
Next, right click on the RAR file you want to extract and select the items from the context menu 7-Zip> Open. Then click on the button Extract in the window that appears on the screen, indicate the location on your computer where you want to save the extracted files and press the button OK. If the RAR file is password protected, you will need to type the password first to proceed.
In addition to the way I just indicated, you can extract your RAR files by right clicking on them, selecting the item 7-Zip from the context menu and choosing, based on your preferences and needs, one of the following options: Extract here (to extract the files to the current location) or Extract the files (to specify an exact location on Windows to extract the files to).

UnRarIt is an excellent free program for Windows that allows you to extract the contents of multiple RAR files at the same time. It works via a simple drag-and-drop and also supports password protected archives.
To use it, the first step you need to take is to connect to its website and click on the item UnRarIt.msi to download it to your PC. When the download is complete, open the file .msi just obtained and, in the window that appears on the desktop, put the check mark next to the item I Agree. When it comes to extracting RAR files on Windows it is practically impossible not to mention the name of WinRAR. It is one of the most renowned programs in the category and allows both to extract and to compress RAR files, as well as many other types of compressed archives. Unlike the previously mentioned programs, it is distributed as trialware: you can then download and each time you start the exhibition be prompted to purchase a license within 40 days. In reality, the software continues to work even after 40 days, but shows the invitations to purchase in a more insistent way and does not allow you to take advantage of some advanced features (eg secure encryption with AES-256-bit logarithm).
To download it to your PC, connect to the program's website and click on the button Pick up placed next to the item WinRAR per Windows Xp/2003/Vista/2008/7/8/10 a 64 bit (if you use a 64-bit version of Windows) or the one you find next to the item WinRAR per Windows Xp/2003/Vista/2008/7/8/10 a 32 bit (if you use 32-bit Windows). At this point, you can finally use WinRAR to decompress RAR files. To do this, right-click on the file in question and select, from the context menu that opens, the item Extract the files. In the software window that you see appear, indicate the output location on the PC in the field above, specify the update and overwrite mode by choosing the options you prefer on the left and click on the button OK down. If the archive is password protected, you will also need to enter the password.
If you need to extract the items contained in the RAR archive directly to the current location, instead, right-click on the file and choose, from the context menu that appears, the option Extract here. If you want to view the contents of the archive without extracting it, choose the option Apri with WinRAR from the context menu always visible after right clicking on the file. Also regarding WinRAR, know you can set the program as default for the management of compressed archives. To find out how to do this, read my post on the subject.
How to Extract RAR Files on MacOS
And up MacOS? What are the tools that can be used to extract RAR files? Those that you would do well to test are listed below. I hope they are able to satisfy you.
The first among the useful resources to decompress files in the RAR format on Mac that I suggest you try is The Unarchiver: it is a totally free application and very easy to use. It supports standard RAR files, those split into multiple volumes and those protected by password. It is also capable of opening ZIP, 7Z and many other compressed archive formats and the contents of ISO and BIN image files and executable files for Windows (EXE).
To download the application on your Mac, visit the relevant section of the Mac App Store Online, click here See in the Mac App Store and, in the "real" window of Mac App Store that opens on the desktop, click on the button Ottieni / Installa. If necessary, then authorize the download of the application by typing your Apple account password or using Touch ID (if you have a Mac equipped with this component).
At the end of the installation procedure, The Unarchiver should set itself automatically as the default application for the management of compressed archives. As a result, double-clicking on any file in RAR format will automatically extract the contents to the current folder. If the RAR file you want to open is password protected, keep in mind that you will need to type it first.
If you then want to intervene on the application options to, for example, define the location in which to save the files after extracting them, what action to take against the compressed file after extraction, etc., call up the main window of The Unarchiver by clicking on the relative icon annexed to Launchpad (or there was the program via Spotlight, Siri or in the folder Applications) and intervene on the various settings available on the screen.
If The Unarchiver does not automatically set itself as the default program for managing compressed archives in RAR format, you can do it by reading the instructions on what to do that I have provided in my tutorial on the subject.
As an alternative to the aforementioned solution, I recommend that you evaluate the use of Keka: it is a free program that allows you to extract RAR files as well as those in 7Z, ZMA, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, ISO, EXE, CAB, PAX and ACE format. It also allows you to create new compressed archives in 7z format, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZP2, DMG and ISO and is easy to use. Note that it is eventually available in a paid variant (costs € 3,49) that can be purchased from the Mac App Store to support and reward the work of developers.
To download Keka on your Mac, visit the program's website and press the button Scarica vx.x.xx. Once the download is complete, open the package .dmg just got it and drag theKeka icon in the folder Applications of macOS. Next, right click on it and select the item apri from the context menu, in order to open the program going to circumvent the limitations that Apple imposes on applications from non-certified developers (an operation that must be performed only at the first start).
Once the Keka window is displayed on the desktop, drag the RAR file to extract over it, in correspondence with the item Release here to extract, and wait for the extraction procedure to be completed. The contents of the archive will be saved in the same location as the original RAR file. Note that if the RAR file you want to extract is password protected, you will need to type it first to continue.
If you deem it necessary, I would like to point out that you can also change the settings relating to the operation of the program by calling up the menu Keka> Preferences (top left) and then adjusting the available options and menus as needed.
However, if you want to set the default program for Keka RAR files on MacOS, follow the instructions on what to do that I have given you in my guide dedicated to the subject.
