Usually, antivirus are quite accurate in being able to identify cyber threats, so, in principle, it is always good to trust the "judgment" given by such software. But I wrote "usually" because, however flawless they may be, even the best antivirus have margins of error and can indicate files that are not actually malicious as malicious.

But how to to recognize a file actually safe from a virus? Assuming that in the case of files from dubious sources (e.g. the executable of a program downloaded from an Internet site you have never heard of) it would be good to trust the antivirus opinion, to do the so-called "litmus test" I suggest you go to the website Virustotal.

In case you have never heard of it, it is a renowned free Web service that allows you to check the security level of any file using the engine of over 70 of the most reliable antivirus on the market. It works directly from the browser window, without downloading absolutely anything to your PC and without making any registrations.

To use it, go to its home page, click on the button Choose file and select the file to be scanned (it must be 128 MB maximum). Next, hit the button Scan and wait for the file to be uploaded online first (if necessary, many files have already been scanned by other users and therefore you can directly view the report) and then processed by the system and you will be given the response.
