You need to urgently format your PC but cannot find the installation disc of Windows 7? Do you want to test some programs by installing Windows 7 on a virtual machine but don't know where to legally find an ISO image of the operating system? Do not worry. There is a simple simple solution to both of these issues.
Believe it or not, Microsoft allows you to download Windows 7 for free directly from its website. Just enter the product key of your license and an ISO image is automatically downloaded which can be used to install the operating system on your computer via DVD or USB key.
As for virtual machines, again Microsoft, through the website dedicated to Edge, offers Windows 7 image files that can be used in VirtualBox, VMware and Parallels Desktop to emulate the operating system in various work environments: not just Windows , but also Linux and macOS. The download is absolutely free and does not require the insertion of any product key, but the images of the operating system "expire" after 90 days. If you want to know more, read on. Find all the information you need right below.
Download on Windows 7 is Free
Microsoft allows you to download the full version of Windows 7 (the one to install directly on your PC) from its official website, but unfortunately the service only applies to customers who have a retail license for the operating system. This means that you can only use it if you bought your copy of the operating system in the store and you didn't find it pre-installed on your computer (in that case we talk about an OEM license).
If you meet this requirement, linked to this web page, type the product key of your copy of Windows 7 in the field Enter the product key and click on the button Verifica to proceed with the download.
A Windows ISO image will be downloaded which you can burn to a DVD or copy to a USB stick to install the operating system on your PC. After installation, you will of course need to activate Windows 7 using the product key you entered on the Microsoft website.
Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool
If you are unable to download Windows 7 via Microsoft's website, you can turn to Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool, a free program that acts as an intermediary between the user and Microsoft servers thanks to which it is possible to download the original ISOs of Windows and Office without having to enter product keys or having to perform other complicated procedures. As already mentioned, the ISO images downloaded from the software are the original ones from Microsoft's servers, so they must be activated regularly with a compatible product key.
Having made this necessary premise, let's take action. To download Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool, connect to the official website of the program and click on the link Windows ISO Downloader.exe. Once the download is complete, start the executable Windows ISO Downloader.exe (the program does not need to be installed to run) and, in the window that opens, put the check mark next to the item Windows 7 (in the right sidebar).
At this point, make sure that at the bottom of the right sidebar there is set theItalian, expand the drop-down menu Select the edition, choose the edition of Windows 7 you want to download on your PC (ex. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 o Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 OEM) and click on your button Confirmation.
Next, select theItalian (or the language in which you want to download Windows) from the drop-down menu that appears at the bottom and first presses the button Confirmation and then 64-bit download o 32-bit download to start the download of Windows 7 64 or 32 bit. To confirm the download, click on the item Save and select the folder to save the Windows 7 ISO image.
Create a DVD or USB Stick for Installing Windows 7
You now have a ISO file in Windows 7 which, to be used, must be copied onto a DVD or USB stick.
To burn the Windows 7 ISO image to a DVD, you can use the tools included “standard” with the operating system. If you are using a version of Windows equal to or higher than 7, in fact, you can burn the ISO files to DVD by simply clicking with the right mouse button on them, selecting the item Burn disc image from the menu that appears and pressing the button Burn present in the window that appears.
Alternatively, I recommend using the excellent free application ImgBurn, which you can download by connecting to its official website and first clicking on the item Mirror x – Provided by MajorGeeks and then [email protected].
A download completo, apri il file SetupImgBurn_xx.exe click her cousin Yesand then Next. Then put the check mark next to the item I accept the terms of the License agreement and complete the ImgBurn installation process by clicking on first Next five consecutive times (remove the check mark from the items related to the installation of additional software, such as Dropbox) and then on Yes e Finish.
When installation is complete, since Imgburn is by default in English, download the Italian translation package of the software and extract the file italian.lng in the folder C:Program Files (x86)ImgBurnLanguages of your PC. Then start ImgBurn and select the Italian language from the menu Tools > Settings.
Now all you have to do is press the button Burn an image of ImgBurn, click on the icon folder placed next to the item Select a file, select the Windows 7 ISO files and click on the icon with the sheet and CD to start burning the DVD with the Windows 7 installation files. If you don't understand any of the steps, read my guide on how to burn ISO.
If you intend to copy the installation files to a USB pendrive, you can use the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool: a small free application that allows you to create a bootable Windows 7 USB stick in a few clicks. To download it to your computer, connect to the CodePlex page that hosts it and press the button Download which is on the right.
When the download is complete, start the file Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool-Installer-en-US.exe click her cousin Run and then Next, install e Finish to conclude the setup.
Next, insert a memory stick of at least 4GB into your PC, start Windows 7 USB / DVD Download Tool and click on the button KATEGORIEN to select the Windows 7 ISO image. Once you have passed this step, click on Next e USB Device, select the unit related to the key and press on Begin Copying to start copying files.
If Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool is not available or does not seem suitable for your needs, you can use Rufus: another free "program" that allows you to create bootable USB sticks for Windows and various Linux distros. All in just a few clicks, it doesn't even need installations. If you want to know more, check out my tutorial on how to burn ISO to USB.
Once you have your DVD or USB stick, restart your PC, boot from the DVD or stick you just created and proceed normally with the installation of Windows 7 as I explained to you in my guide on the subject.
In case of errors, if you are unable to boot from the Windows 7 DVD or USB stick and you have a fairly recent PC (sold with Windows 8 or later pre-installed), you may need to enter the UEFI settings and disable the feature secure boot or activate the mode Legacy BIOS. To learn more, check out my tutorial on how to get into the BIOS.
Download Windows 7 Images (Virtual Machine)
If you want download Windows 7 for free to have an image of the operating system to be used in a virtual machine, linked to this page of the Microsoft website, expand the drop-down menu Virtual Machine and select IE11 on Win7 (x86) da quest'ultimo.
Then switch to the drop-down menu Select platform, select the name of the software you intend to use to virtualize the operating system (eg. VirtualBox, VMware o Parallels Desktop) and click on your button Download .zip located at the bottom to start the download of the Windows 7 virtual image.
Once the download is complete, extract the Windows image from the ZIP archive in which it is contained (if you use a Mac you may have to use The Unarchiver or other third-party programs) and import it into your favorite virtualization program using the appropriate procedure. If you are not sure how to import an image file into your virtualization software, take a look at my guides on how to open VMDK files with VMware and VirtualBox and how to virtualize an operating system in which I explained how to create and manage virtual machines .
As mentioned above, Windows 7 images targeting virtual machines have a expiration of 90 days. This means that after 90 days they should be discontinued but, as also reported on the Microsoft website, to bypass the problem just create one snapshot of the virtual machine (ie a snapshot of the virtual machine) before expiration and restore it if necessary (ie after the 90 days of the "official" expiration).
Another important thing to underline is that the Windows images downloaded through this mode are in English. If this is a problem for you, you can download the Windows 7 ISO image as explained above (then via the Microsoft website or via the utility Windows and Office ISO Download Tool) and use it to create a “classic” virtual machine in VirtualBox, VmWare or other virtualization software. In this case, however, you will need to activate the virtualized system with a valid product key.
