After reading my guide on how to create a YouTube channel, you've decided to open one and unleash your passion for video games. In addition to posting reviews and unboxing of newly purchased games, you would also like to make live videos and upload recordings of your gameplay. Unfortunately, however, having never had to deal with streaming broadcasts and screen recordings, you have no idea how to go about doing this. I guessed it, right? If so, I have the right program for you: OBS.
OBS, acronym for Open Broadcaster Software, is an open source program that allows both to make local recordings and to broadcast live on the Internet, with the ability to change scene according to your needs. Furthermore, it allows you to set the audio and video sources to record, also choosing the quality and output format (MP4, MKV, FLV and MOV). OBS is easy to use and also allows automatic configuration so as not to waste too much time in setting the recording and transmission parameters. How do you say? Is this exactly the solution you were looking for? So don't waste any more time and deepen your knowledge right away!
Come on, make yourself comfortable, take five minutes of free time and let me explain how to download OBS on your computer. Read the next paragraphs carefully and you will find all the information you need to download and install the program, thus being able to offer all the content you want, both recorded and live. Minimum Requirements to Use OBS
Before explaining to you how to download OBS, it will be useful to know what the minimum requirements that your computer must satisfy in order to install this program.
OBS is compatible with Windows e MacOS with the following requirements.
- Operating System: Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10; macOS 10.11 and later;
- Free disk space: 400 MB;
- Other: DirectX 10.1 or later (on Windows only).
You must know that the requirements just indicated refer to the installation of the program on your computer and to make recordings locally. The resources needed to record and stream online vary depending on the platform used.
Download OBS on Windows
After making sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements outlined in the previous paragraphs, you are ready for download OBS on Windows and proceed with its installation.
To download OBS, connect to the official website of the program and press the button Windows to start downloading the installation file. Alternatively, click on the entry Download present in the menu at the top and, in the new open page, make sure that the logo on Windows (l'icona dei four squares).
Now, scroll down the page and choose the download solution that best suits your needs by clicking on one of the options visible on the right: Download Installer to download the latest version of OBS; Download installar (32 bit) to download the program for 32-bit versions of Windows; Download via BitTorrrent to download the OBS Torrent file e Download ZIP to start downloading a ZIP package containing the OBS installation files. Also, by clicking on the item Previous Releases, you can access the previous software versions page and download the one you are interested in.
Once you have made your choice and completed the OBS download, you are ready to install the program. Then open the file OBS-Studio- [versione] -Installer.exe e pulsing sul pulsating Yes to allow the program to make changes to your computer, then click the button Next and presses the button I Agree to accept the terms of the contract (necessary to continue with the installation).
Now, choose the destination folder for the OBS installation and click on the button Next, then place the check mark on any additional components to add to the installation (you can read the description of each component in the box Description on the right) and presses the button install. Then wait for the green bar to reach 100% and click the button Finish to complete the installation and start OBS.
If you have chosen to download the program in ZIP format, right click on the file you just downloaded, select the option Extract everything from the menu that opens and presses the button Extract to extract the OBS installation files. To learn more, you can read my guide on how to open ZIP files.
Now, open the folder you just extracted, click on the folder bin, locate the file OBS.exe and double click on it to start the program without installing it. Press the button Run And that's it.
If, on the other hand, on the page Download OBS Studio of the program's official website you clicked on the button Download via BitTorrent, make sure you have installed on your computer one of the programs to download files from the BitTorrent network, such as qBittorrent and BitTorrent. Then double click on file OBS-Studio- [version] .exe.torrent to add it to one of the programs just mentioned and wait for the download to be completed, then repeat the installation procedure described above.
Download OBS on Mac
The procedure for download OBS on Mac it is similar to the one I indicated in the chapter of the guide dedicated to Windows. In fact, even in this case, the first thing you need to do is connect to the official website of the software, then you have to press the button macOS [version] present on the main page under the heading OBS Studio.
Once the download is complete, double-click the file obs-mac- [versione] -installer.pkgclick on your button Continue and, if there are more disks on your Mac, select the one on which you want to install OBS, and then click again on the button Continue. Finally, press the button InstallI inserted the password of your user account on macOS and presses the button Install software to start the installation. The message "The installation is successful" will confirm the successful installation of OBS: then press the button Close and click sul pulsating Move to move the software installation file to the Mac's trash.
You must know that, even for Mac, you can choose to download OBS from the BitTorrent network: in this case, connected to the program's website, click on the item Download present in the main menu and on the page Download OBS Studio, fai clic sull'icona della bitten apple. Press the button Download via BitTorrent on the right and wait for the Torrent file to download.
Now, double click on the file obs-mac-[versione]-installer.pkg.torrent to open it automatically with one of the programs to download files from the BitTorrent network. If you don't have one on your Mac yet, I'll leave you with my guide dedicated to BitTorrent programs. Once the OBS installation file has been downloaded from the BitTorrent network, double-click the file obs-mac- [versione] -installer.pkg and repeat the installation procedure described in the previous paragraphs.
How to Use OBS
OBS is an easy-to-use program that works the same on both Windows and macOS. However, if at the first launch of the program you failed to understand how to use OBS, continue reading to discover its main features.
All you need to do to start recording with OBS is to set up the video and audio sources and click the button Start recording. To proceed, locate the box Scene below and make sure there is at least one scene. If not, click the button + e pulsing sul pulsating OK to create the scene needed for recording. Now, click the button + relative to the box References and select one of the available options (Browser, Capture the window, Cattura l'audio in entrata, Origin of color etc.). If, for example, you want to make a recording of your computer's desktop, select the option Screen capture.
In the mixer visible below, you can manage the audio captured by the microphone (Mic / Aux) and the sounds played by your computer (Audio desktop), setting the audio and applying any filters. Finally, if you have created more than one scene, you must know that you can switch from one scene to another and choose whether to apply transition transitions that you can set using the drop-down menu in the box Scene transitions.
Before starting the recording, by clicking on the button Settings, you can also set video resolution, audio channels, create keyboard shortcuts, and much more. When you're ready to record, press the button Start recording, while clicking on the button Stop recording you can stop recording and save it on your computer.
If, on the other hand, you want to broadcast live on the Internet, you should know that OBS is already set up for direct broadcasting on platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, DailyMotion etc. All you have to do is log in to Settings of OBS, click on the option Transmission and select Streaming services using the drop-down menu next to the item Stream type.
