How to Download Movie Maker

You just formatted your PC and Movie Maker, the famous video editing software from Microsoft, seems to have disappeared from the Start menu? Have you bought a new laptop with Windows 10 and can't find Movie Maker? This doesn't surprise me. Microsoft has officially ceased support for Movie Maker and is no longer making the program available for download (along with the rest of the Windows Essentials suite, of which it is a part). In any case, don't worry: you can get it from external sources or you can turn to alternative video editing solutions, equally valid (if not more!).

So if you dedicate a few minutes of your free time to me, I can explain how to download Movie Maker and install it on your PC in a very simple way. The program, as already mentioned, has not been updated for some time, but it works perfectly even on the most recent versions of Windows (to be precise, you can use it on Windows 7, Windows 8.x and Windows 10, the procedure to follow is the same on all three operating systems). I would say, therefore, not to get further lost in chatter and to see immediately what are the steps that need to be taken.

I guarantee that you will be able to do everything in a very simple way, whether you decide to keep Movie Maker or to replace it with one of the many alternatives that I will tell you about in the course of the tutorial. That said, there is nothing left for me to do but wish you a good read and a good time. I'm sure you will be able to create small masterpieces to share with friends and family!

How to Download Movie Maker for Free

If, despite the end of official support, you want to download the good old Movie Maker, here's how you can get it and what are the steps you need to take to install it on your PC. If, on the other hand, you are looking for alternatives to Movie Maker, consult the dedicated chapter of this tutorial.

How to Download Movie Maker on Windows 10, Windows 8.x and Windows 7

If you are using a fairly recent version of Windows, namely Windows 10, Windows 8.x, or Windows 7, you can download Movie Maker by connecting to MajorGeeks, which allows you to download the English version of Movie Maker simply by clicking on the item [email protected].

When the download is complete open, by double clicking on it, the file you just downloaded (wlsetup-web.exe) and click on the button first Yes and then Select the programs to install. Therefore, leave the check mark only next to the item Photo Gallery and Movie Maker and click on the button Install to complete the installation of Movie Maker. The procedure may take several minutes as Windows will download all the files necessary for the program to function correctly from the Internet.

At this point, click on your button Close to close the Movie Maker setup and start the program by clicking on its icon in the Start menu. If you can't find it, click on windows flag located in the lower left corner of the screen, type movie maker in the search field of the Start menu and click on the film icon that appears in the search results.

Now all you have to do is browse the tabs located at the top of the Movie Maker window and select the effects or functions you need. In the card Home find tools to add photos, videos, external audio files (to use as a soundtrack) and record audio narrations in real time; besides there are gods predefined themes to create effect video montages with one click, some tools to add titles to movie and functions for rotate videos.

By moving to the tab Animations you can find lots of animations to add to the video (including fade effects to switch from one scene to another or from one photo to another); in the card Visual effects find dozens of special effects to apply to videos, while in Modification there are tools of various kinds, such as those for cutting videos and stabilizing shaky movies.

When you're done editing your video, go back to the tab Home of Movie Maker, click on the button Save movie located at the top right and choose in which format to export the video: for computers, per iPhone, for android phone and so on. The duration of the export process has a variable duration, which depends on the duration of the movie to be processed and the power of the PC in use.

How to Download Movie Maker on Windows XP and Vista

It was used Windows Vista o Windows XP, Movie Maker should already be installed on your PC as it is included “standard” in both operating systems.

To be precise, in Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Business and Enterprise Edition there is Windows Movie Maker 6.0, while in Windows XP SP2 and Windows XP SP3 there is Windows Movie Maker 2.1. More info here.

How to Download Movie Maker on Smartphones and Tablets

If you have a Windows tablet based on ARM architecture, and then you can't download Movie Maker, try opening the Windows Store and search for terms video editor. You will find several apps, both free and paid, that allow you to edit videos. among these I point out Movie Edit Touch which is quite good and allows you to apply various types of changes to movies. Its basic version is free, while the more complete one with extra functions costs 3,99 euros.

Alternative a Movie Maker

If you do not have special needs related to the use of Movie Maker, I strongly advise you to contact alternative software which, in many cases, are more complete than the historical Microsoft software. An example above all? Wondershare Filmora.

To download Wondershare Filmora, connect to the official website of the program and press the button Download located in the center of the screen. When the download is complete, if you are using Windows, start the file .exe obtained, click on the button Yes, then up Install and, at the end of the download and installation of all the components necessary for the functioning of Filmora, click on It begins now, to finish the setup and start the program.

If you use a Poppy, to install Filmora, open the package .dmg obtained, click on the button Accept and drag the program icon to the folder Applications of macOS. At the first start, answer apri to the message that appears on the screen, to confirm opening the software.

Now you are ready to carry out your projects in Filmora. To begin, select the video format you prefer from the drop-down menu on the program's home screen and click on the button New project.

You will immediately find yourself in front of the main window of Filmora, which is composed of numerous elements: at the top is the menu to manage files and recall program tools; under the menu is the toolbar with the buttons to browse Media (i.e. multimedia files), Audio, Titles, Transitions, Effetti and others elements (es. emoji and badge).

In the center of the window, however, there are libraries related to the selected contents (e.g. videos imported into the program, audio effects, titles, etc.), followed by the box in which import media files and from the preview of movie under processing.

At the bottom, then, there is the timeline in which to insert all the elements of the project (arranging them in the order you prefer). Above the timeline are two toolbars: the one on the left contains buttons for delete the selected contents (the basket), cut them (scissors), cut out the picture (the cutter), change the playback speed (watch), adjust the colors (the palette), apply effects related to the green screen (the screen) e edit the video, rotating it, zooming, etc. (the adjustment bars).

On the right side, however, there are buttons for add markers to the movie, record a voiceover, open the audio mixer, activate it zoom to fit e increase / decrease the zoom of the video. As I told you before, it's all very intuitive.

To bring your project to life, drag the videos you want to work on into the box Import media files here Filmora or, if you prefer, select them "manually" via the menu File> Import Media> Import Media Files of the program (top left).

Next, drag the videos of your interest to the timeline placed at the bottom and, if required, choose to combine the characteristics of the first movie to the current project (by responding to the appropriate notice that appears on the screen).

Now you just have to select the portion of video you want to act on, always using the timeline at the bottom, and apply the desired effects or changes, using the program buttons. If, on the other hand, you want to add transitions, titles or other elements, all you have to do is select the appropriate tabs located at the top, identify the content of your interest and drag it to the timeline, being careful to position it in the point of the movie where you want. make it appear.

When you are satisfied with the result, to export your video, click on the button Export at the top and choose whether to continue using the free version of Filmora by clicking on the button Create account, or whether to purchase one of the paid variants of the software by clicking on the relevant button Buy it now.

Once this is done, you need to create an account: click on the button Create account and fill out the form that is proposed to you with all the required data. Then click the button again Export, awarded his Keep using and choose the format you want to export your video to: you can choose a generic file type (is. MP4), a device target (e.g. iPad) or you can create a video optimized for DVDYouTube o Vimeo.

Finally, use the drop-down menu Save to indicate the folder in which to save the video; adjust, if you want, the resolution and bitrate of the video (by clicking on the button Settings), and start saving the output file by clicking on the button Export.

The free version of Filmora imprints a watermark on the generated videos: to remove it (and also get free technical support), you need to sign up for a subscription starting from 39,99 euros / year or you need to buy a lifetime license for 59,99 euros a one-off.
