Well, then don't worry and follow the directions I'm about to give you.

If you give me a few minutes of your free time, I can list a series of FTP programs among the best available on the square and explain both how to create the connection with the server of your interest and how to upload and download files from it. In addition, I will show you a list of applications to download on smartphones and tablets and which allow you to view, edit and download the files available on FTP servers. How do you say? FileZilla (Windows/macOS)

fileZilla is among the best FTP programs to be installed on your computer. It allows you to upload and download files via FTP and SFTP protocols quickly and easily through a convenient tabbed interface completely in Italian. It is available for free for Windows, macOS and Linux.

To download FileZilla on your computer, connected to the official website of the program, click on the button Download FileZilla Client and, in the new open page, presses the buttons Download FileZilla Client e Download. Once the download is complete, if you have a PC Windows, double-click the file FileZilla_[versione]_setup_bundled.exe e pulsing sul pulsating Run, then click the buttons I agree e Next four consecutive times, remove the check marks to avoid installing avast Antivirus e Search Offer di Bing (or other promotional programs offered during setup) and presses the button again Next but I will complete the procedure.

Finally, select the type of access between Anonymous (if the FTP server supports anonymous access) or Normal if you have a combination of username and password to access your FTP space. Once the connection with the server is established, you are ready to transfer data or manage files already on the server. In the box Local site you can view the folders and files on your computer, while in the box on the left Remote site the folders and files already on the server are visible: select the files or folders to be transferred, specify their destination and drag the data from one part to another to start the transfer.

Via the tabs below File in coda, Transfers not completed e Transfers completed, you can view the status of the data transfer with files that have been successfully transferred, those that have not been transferred, and those pending transfer. Cyberduck (Windows/macOS/Linux)

Cyberduck is another free FTP program, available for Windows, macOS and Linux. It has a very accurate and simple to use user interface, through which it is possible to upload and download files of all kinds from FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Windows Azure and other systems. It integrates some advanced features for sharing content on Google Docs, Amazon S3 and other popular cloud services.

If you think Cyberduck is the solution that best suits your needs, connect to the official website of the software, scroll the page down and click the button Download to start downloading. Alternatively, you should know that you can also download Cyberduck as a paid application from the Windows Store (23,99 euros) and from the Mac App Store (26,99 euros) to support its development.

Download completed, if you have a PC Windows, double-click the file Cyberduck-Installer-[versione].exe, pigia sul pulsating Run and click on the button Install to complete the program installation. If, on the other hand, you have a Poppy, double-click the file Cyberduck- [version] .zip, drag Cyderduck in the folder Applications macOS and open the latter, then right-click on the program icon and select the item apri to start the program for the first time and avoid macOS restrictions for applications from non-certified developers.

After starting the program, click the button New connection (top left) to establish your first connection to the server of your interest. In the new window opened, select the protocol supported by the server between FTP, FTP-SSL, SFTP etc. or choose the service to connect to between Windows Azure Storage, Amazon S3, dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive etc.

Then enter the required data in the fields Server & Hosting, Port, Username e Password and click sul pulsating connection to connect to the server. If, on the other hand, you have chosen to connect to one of the available cloude storage services, follow the authentication procedure, enter the authorization code in the field Authentication code e pulsing sul pulsating Continue to access the files on your account.

To download or upload files, click the button Actions and, from the menu that appears, select the item Download to download a file on the server or option Upload to upload a file from your computer to the server.

CuteFTP (Windows/macOS)

Among the most popular programs for uploading and downloading files from FTP servers there is also CuteFTP. It is a paid software that supports secure connections, backups on FTP servers, upload schedules and simultaneous transfer of up to 100 files. It costs $ 59,99 for Windows and $ 39,99 for macOS: for both operating systems, a free 30-day trial version is available to test its operation.

To download the trial version of CuteFTP, connected to the manufacturer's website and presses the button Free trial present at the top right, then scroll the page down, click on the item Try CuteFTP Now and, on the newly opened page, select the option Download Free Trial for two consecutive times. Now, you're got a PC Windows, double-click the file cuteftp.exe, pigia sul pulsating Run and click sul pulsating Next for two consecutive times, then presses the button Yes e Next to start the installation. Wait a few moments and click the button Endish to complete the installation and close the window.

Now, in the left part of the program you can see the folders and files on your computer, while in the right part you can see the folders and files available on the server to which you are connected. To upload a new file to the server, select the one you are interested in, specify the destination folder of the server and drag the file. Alternatively, after selecting the file, click the button Upload up. Conversely, to download a file from the server to your computer, repeat the steps above and click on the button Download present in the top menu.

To connect to a new server, click the star located at the top left and repeat the procedure described above, entering the data in your possession in the fields Host address, Username e Password. Once the free trial has expired, if you intend to purchase the full version of the program, press the button Buy now present at the top right and follow the guided procedure.

Transmit (macOS)

Transmit is a program for macOS that allows very fast data transfer to and from FTP servers, also offering the possibility of limiting the download and upload bandwidth. Allows connection to FTP, SFTP, WebDAV servers and cloud storage services such as Amazon Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox and many more. It comes in a 7-day free trial version, after which it costs $ 45.

To try Transmit's features for free, log on to its official website and click the buttons Try it e Download Transmit now to start downloading. When the download is complete, double-click the file transmit- [version] .zip and drag Transmit in the folder Applications macOS, then open the latter, right-click on the program icon and select the item apri from the menu that appears (this is necessary only at the first start, to bypass the macOS restrictions for programs that come from non-certified developers).

Now, start Transmit and press the button Get started to access its main screen. On the right side of the program, set the connection with the server of your interest: first, specify the protocol or storage service you want to connect to via the drop-down menu next to the item Protocol, then enter the connection data in the fields Address, Port (The Harbour District), Username e Password and click on the button Connect.

Once the connection with the server is established, you are ready to transfer your files. On the left side of Transmit, select the files to be transferred on your computer, then select the destination folder on the server and drag the files you have selected into it. Obviously, you can also download the files from the server to your computer by following the same instructions provided for the upload but by acting first on the right side of Transmit (the one where the files on the server are visible) and then on the left side.

Applications for FTP

Besides the FTP programs to install on your computer, you need to know that they exist FTP applications that allow you to download (and upload) files from FTP servers directly from smartphones and tablets: here are some that you can consider.

  • AndFTP (Android): is a free application that allows you to upload and download files from FTP servers. Furthermore, it allows you to open, rename and delete files both remotely and locally and allows you to connect to multiple servers simultaneously. It is also available in a Pro version with more features at a cost of 4,77 euros.
  • FTPManager (iOS): is one of the best FTP clients for iPhone and iPad. It allows uploading and downloading of files, but also remote editing and, in the case of audio or video files, allows them to be streamed directly from the server. In its free version it allows you to connect only to one server, while in the Pro version (3,49 euros) it has no limitations.
  • FtpCafe (Android): the application has minimal but well-finished graphics that allow you to connect to the server and manage files easily, even if there are advertising banners. However, it is possible to remove them by purchasing the Pro version at a cost of 3,49 euros.
  • FTP Client Lite (iOS): is another valid application for iPhone and iPad, which is used to upload and download files from FTP servers. It also lets you easily rename, edit, move and view files, with the ability to stream audio and video files. It is free but an FTP Client Pro version is also available at a cost of 4,49 euros.
