File Torrent

Your friends have been recommending you to download from the Internet using i for some time file Torrent but you don't understand what it is? Nothing complicated, I assure you. Files with the “.torrent” extension are documents of a few KB that allow applications such as uTorrent, qBitTorrent and Transmission (the so-called BitTorrent clients) to download and share files on the BitTorrent network. Don't you know what it is? Strange.

The BitTorrent network is one of the most used peer-to-peer systems in the world and the “.torrent” files, to put it simply, are links that direct BitTorrent clients to the files the user wants to download on their computer. They are not essential, in fact there are also special links called magnet links which, if clicked, allow you to download data from the BitTorrent network without using any file as an intermediary, but we will talk about this in a while.

Now let's try to clarify the Torrent clients, their functioning and the role that “.torrent” files and magnet links play within the BitTorrent network. I assure you that it is a less complex topic than it seems, at least if your purpose is only to set up a software correctly and start downloading files from the BitTorrent network. Happy reading and have fun!

Where to Find Torrent Files

Let's start by looking at how to search for file Torrent, and more specifically how to find the ones that allow for faster downloads. As you may have already guessed, what you need is a search engine that can "find" the files hosted on all the major Torrent sites and provide detailed information about the number of sources that share them online. Here are some that I believe are among the best currently in circulation.

Zooqle

An excellent search engine for Torrent files that I recommend you add to your favorites is Zooqle, which on the home page has a list of only the most popular files in the field of movies and TV series but can be used to search for any type of file on the BitTorrent network.

To use it, connected to its home page, type the name of the file you want to find in the field at the top left and press the icon of the magnifying glass. Then arrange the search results according to the number of sources available (by double clicking on the arrow located above the green and yellow colored bars) and locate the file to download.

In conclusion, select the file of your interest and choose whether to download it via file Torrent o Magnet Link by clicking on one of the appropriate items in the right sidebar.

TorrentSeeker

Another search engine for Torrent files that I recommend you try is TorrentSeeker, which is completely free, is extremely easy to use and provides results based on the databases of over 100 Torrent sites among the best on the market. To use it, just connect to its home page and type the name of the file you want to find on the BitTorrent network in the search bar located in the center of the screen. It doesn't matter the type of content: you can find movies, music albums, games, applications and much more.

Once you have identified the Torrent file to download, click on its name and choose whether to download the torrent file or whether to use the magnet link and automatically start the download of the file within your default client without going through the document of a few KB usually used as a "link".

BTDigg

BTDigg is a search engine that makes simplicity and immediacy its most important weapons. Its home page is completely devoid of frills: there is only the search bar through which to search for files on the BitTorrent network. It is based on the DHT system and hosts only magnet links, not Torrent files.

To use BTDigg, perform your search on the site, select the one you are interested in (unfortunately it is not possible to display the number of seeds and peers, while it is possible to sort the results based on relevance, date e dimensions) and click the button magnet link or to start the download.

Other Torrent Sites

The ones I just pointed out to you are not the only search engines for Torrent files. There are many other sites, some with their own databases, others that act as a "bridge" to the databases of other sites, which allow you to find movies, music, games and many other contents on the BitTorrent network. If you want to find out which ones are the best, check out my post on Torrent sites.

In the post I just pointed out to you, I also told you about Bit Che, a free program for Windows that allows you to search for Torrent files on various sites without opening the browser. It's very comfortable, try it and I'm sure you won't regret it.

Programs to Download Torrent Files

You have not yet installed a client to download file Torrent on your PC? No problem. Now I recommend some that I think are among the best in the category and that can be used on all major computer operating systems: Windows, macOS and Linux.

uTorrent (Windows / Mac / Linux)

If you have never heard of it, uTorrent is one of the most famous software to download files from the BitTorrent network in the world. It is available for both Windows and macOS and Linux and includes a very useful function that automatically optimizes the software settings based on the actual connection speed. In this way, downloads always go fast - within the limits of what is possible - and the upload bandwidth is not saturated.

The only big flaw of uTorrent is that it includes many banner ads and sometimes offers promotional content even during installation. To remove these annoyances you could buy the paid version of the software (€ 25,23) but in the end, promotional content can be easily bypassed and you can live with it with banner ads.

To download uTorrent to your computer and click on the button Download uTorrent For Windows (twice in a row) or on the button Free Download For Mac depending on the operating system you use. When the download is complete, if you are using a Windows PC, open the uTorrent installation package (utorrent.exe) and, in the window that opens, first click on the button OK and then Yes e forward twice in a row. Then accept the conditions of use of the software by clicking on the button Accept, go again forward and click on end to finish the setup. If you are offered promotional content, uncheck the item Yes, I’d love to check out this download.

If you are using a Mac, to install uTorrent you have to open the dmg packageyou downloaded from the program's website and you need to run the executable uTorrent present inside. In the window that opens, click on the button first apri and then Continue. Therefore, refuse the download of promotional content by pressing the button Decline and wait for the software installation process to complete.

After the installation is complete, if you haven't changed the program's default settings, uTorrent will automatically be set as the default BitTorrent client on your computer. This means that if you double click on a file in .torrent format or select a magnet link in the browser, it will be automatically imported into uTorrent which will process it and then start downloading the files from the BitTorrent network.

After installing uTorrent, access the menu Options> Setup Wizard of the latter and carries out the line test to automatically optimize the download and upload parameters of the program. Before doing this, make sure to open the ports in the router as explained in the final part of this tutorial.

If you need more details on the uTorrent connection test (which is only available on Windows) and / or want more detailed information on how the program works, consult the uTorrent guide that I previously published on the blog. If you are using a Mac, also check out my tutorial on how to speed up uTorrent Mac in which I explained how to speed up uTorrent to the maximum on macOS.

Transmission (Mac/Linux)

uTorrent is also available for Mac, but if you use an Apple home computer I suggest you opt for Transmission and set it as the default client to download file Torrent. Also in this case, we are talking about a free and extremely easy to use application that guarantees maximum performance in downloads.

To download it on your Mac, connect to its official website and click on the link first Download now and then on the voice Transmission-x.xx.dmg located next to the macOS logo. When the download is complete, open the package dmg just downloaded and drag the icon Transmission in the folder of Applications.

Next, right click on the software icon and select the item aprifrom the menu that appears to start it. Like uTorrent, Transmission also automatically becomes the default client with which Torrent files are opened and magnet links are processed.

qBitTorrent (Windows/Mac/Linux)

If uTorrent and / or Transmission don't meet your tastes, try qBitTorrent. It is a great free and open source BitTorrent client that is very easy to use and is ad-free. It is compatible not only with Windows, but also with macOS and Linux and includes a search function for Torrent files that allows you to find files on the BitTorrent network without opening the browser.

To download qBitTorrent on your PC, connect to its official website and click on the item qBittorrent vxx 32-bit and 64-bit installers and PGP signatureplaced next to the Windows flag, or on the entry qBittorrent vxx (DMG and PGP signature) located next to the macOS logo, depending on the operating system you are using. Then to actually start downloading the program, click on the link Download qBittorrent Windows or on the link Download qBittorrent Mac OS X present on the page that if you press.

When the download is complete, if you are using a Windows PC, open the qBitTorrent installation package (qbittorrent_xx_setup.exe) and first click on Yes and then OK e forward. Then put the check mark next to the item I accept the license conditions and finish the setup by first clicking on forward twice in a row and then on Install e end.

If you are using a Mac, when the download is complete, open the package dmg which contains qBitTorrent and copies the program icon to the folder Applications of macOS. Then right click on the same icon and select the item aprifrom the menu that appears. This procedure is only necessary at the first start, since qBitTorrent does not come from a certified developer and therefore without this device macOS would prohibit its execution.

At this point, qBitTorrent should have become your default BitTorrent client and should be ready to accommodate both .torrent files and magnet links. If you want to take advantage of the search functionality included in the program, select the item Search engine from the menu View and accept the installation of Python, a free component essential for the operation of the search engine under Windows (on macOS it is not necessary to install any additional component).

Flud (Android)

Who said that to download files from the BitTorrent network you have to use a PC ?! If you have a smartphone or tablet equipped with the operating system Android, you can install the free Flud app and download any file from the BitTorrent network directly to your portable device.

The operation of Flud is very similar to that of uTorrent (also available in Android version), qBitTorrent and other clients for computers. After selecting a .torrent file or a magnet link in your browser, all you have to do is select Flud from the list of applications that appears on the screen and confirm the start of the download.

How to Download Torrent Files (and Magnet Links)

You are now ready to download any file on the BitTorrent network. How? Simply by double clicking on a file .torrent or by selecting a magnet link in the browser. Once you have done one of these two operations, the BitTorrent client you have installed on your PC will start automatically and will probably ask you in which folder you want to save the files that are about to be added to the download queue.

Once you have chosen the download folder, the BitTorrent client will analyze the .torrent file or the magnet link that you have given it "at meal" and within a few seconds it will start downloading data from the BitTorrent network.

In terms of performance and / or privacy, there are no major differences between the use of “.torrent” files and magnet links. The latter take a few more seconds to "carburet" but do not need a support server to obtain the download coordinates, so potentially they are more long-lived, but these are details. Simply choose the solution that seems most comfortable for your needs.

For privacy, it is important to use a VPN, that is, a virtual private network for browse and download from the Internet anonymously. Among the many VPN services available, I would like to point out NordVPN (which I told you about in depth here) and Surfshark, which work on PC / Mac, smartphones, tablets and other devices and have many servers, scattered all over the world, on which you can rely. They also allow you to overcome regional blocks and access foreign catalogs of streaming services and are very cheap.

ATTENTION: downloading copyrighted content in an abusive manner can be considered a crime. It is absolutely not my intention to encourage piracy and, therefore, I do not take responsibility for the use that could be made of the information in this post (which is intended for illustrative purposes only).

Don't Forget to Open the Ports in the Router!

To allow your BitTorrent client to accept incoming connections and download at the maximum possible speed, you need to go to the settings panel of your router and you need to open doors, i.e. the communication channels that uTorrent, qBitTorrent and the like use to communicate with the outside world.

To do this, open the browser you usually use to surf the Internet (eg. Chrome) and connect to your router address, which should be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. You will be asked to type a username and password combination to access the device configuration panel: if you have not set a custom combination, try admin / admin or with admin / password.

At this point, identify the router function relating toport forwarding or to virtual server, start creating a new rule or a new virtual server and fill out the form that is proposed to you as follows.

  • Public door / Plocal garden - enter the port number used by your BitTorrent client. You can find out which port is used by your BitTorrent client by going to its settings and selecting the connection item.
  • Destination IP /Server IP address - enter the local IP address of your PC. If you don't know how to view the IP address of the PC, read the tutorial I dedicated to the subject.
  • Name - here you can type a name of your preference (eg uTorrent or qBitTorrent).

Then click on the button for save your settings and that's it. If any of the steps are not clear to you and / or you were unable to locate the section of your router dedicated to port forwarding, consult my tutorials dedicated to the various brands of routers (each of which presents a configuration menu structured in a different way) .
