ODT File: What It Is

To begin with, let's try to understand what's this, precisely, a file ODT. As anticipated at the beginning, it is a format for i textual documents part of the project Opendocument, which was born with the aim of providing a free and free standard for creating text files, spreadsheets, presentations and other documents.

Its particularity is that it is a universal writing format, which allows a practically unlimited and free use of its specifications all over the world. In other words, regardless of the operating system and device used, when a file in ODT format is opened or created, it is possible to do so without any restrictions, always free and free.

ODT Files: How to Open Them

LibreOffice (Windows/macOS/Linux)

If you are interested in opening ODT files on computer, I suggest you rely on LibreOffice. It is a free and open source productivity suite. It replicates almost all the functions offered by Microsoft Office, guarantees a good speed in the release of updates and also offers the possibility to modify PDF files without installing additional plugins. It is completely in Italian (including spelling checker), supports both incoming and outgoing ODTs and is available for all major computer operating systems: Windows, macOS and Linux.

To download LibreOffice on your PC, connect to the official website of the software and click on the button Download version xx. Once downloaded, if you are using Windows, april il file .msi obtained and, in the window that appears on the desktop, press the button Run. Then click on the button forward, select the option Typical and press on the buttons forward, Install, Yes e end, but will finish the setup.

Mission accomplished! ODT format files should now be automatically associated with LibreOffice. Therefore, trying to open one by double clicking it should show directly in Writer, the word processing application included in the suite.

Alternatively, to open files in ODT format, start LibreOffice, selecting the relevant collegamento that you find in Start menu (on Windows) or by clicking on its icon which was added to the Launchpad (on macOS) and once the main program window appears, click the button Open file that you find in the left sidebar, then select the document you intend to view and that's it.

Word Online

If you don't want or can't install new programs on your computer, I suggest you rely on Word Online. It is, as easily understood by the name itself, the online version of the famous Microsoft program, accessible via the Web.

It has all the main features of the "classic" Word, works from any browser and operating system without having to download absolutely anything on your computer and is totally free. The only thing to consider is that in order to take advantage of it you need to log in with your Microsoft account.

That said, to open an ODT file with Word Online, the first step you need to take is to start the browser that you generally use to surf the net from your computer (eg. Chrome), go to the home page of the service and log in to your Microsoft account (if necessary).

Then, open the ODT file in relation to which you are interested in intervening, by dragging it into the browser window and pressing the button Open OneDrive. In the new page that opens, click on the menu Charge located at the top, choose the item Fillet from the latter, select the document and, once upload is complete, click on the relevant one preview.

After completing the above steps, a new Word Online browser tab will open where you can view the contents of your ODT file.

App Word (Android/iOS/iPadOS)

If you don't have a computer at your disposal and you are looking for a solution that allows you to open ODT files from smartphones and tablets, I suggest you consider using the app Microsoft Word for Android and iOS / iPadOS devices.

It is essentially the mobile counterpart of the famous Word for computer or, more specifically, of the online version of the service. It is completely free for all devices of size equal to or less than 10.1 ″ (otherwise you need to subscribe to the Microsoft 365 service, with prices starting from 7 euros / month) and to work it requires the login to the Microsoft account.

That said, to download the application to your device if you are using Android, visit the relative section of the Play Store and press the button Install. Stai using iOS / iPadOSinstead, access the relevant section of the App Store, press the button Get, quindi quello Install and authorize the download via Face ID, touch ID o password dell'ID Apple. Then start the app by pressing the button apri comparso sullo schermo oppure selecting the relative icon which has just been added on the home screen or in the drawer.

Now that you see the main screen of the app, log in to yours Microsoft account (if necessary) and follow the short introductory tutorial that is proposed to you. Next, tap on the icon with the folder located at the bottom right, indicates the position from which you intend to take the ODT file you want to open, select the document of your interest and you can finally view it on the next screen.

ODT Files: How to Convert Them

You have to share ODT files with other users who you think do not have useful software at their disposal to view the documents in question and, to overcome the problem, you are therefore asking how to convert them in a different format? In this case, you can rely on the tools you find listed below.

LibreOffice (Windows/macOS/Linux)

LibreOffice, the free and open source productivity suite for Windows, MacOS e Linux I was talking about in the step at the beginning of the guide, it is also useful for converting the ODT files that are created with it or that in any case are given to it "at meal" into a different format. How? I'll explain it to you right away.

To begin with, open with LibreOffice the file in ODT format in relation to which you are interested in going to act. Once the Writer on the screen, then click on the menu Fillet located at the top left and select the option Save with name from the latter, if you want to save the ODT file always in the form of a text document but in a different format (eg Word), or the one Export, to save the document in a different file type (eg. PDF)

Finally, in the further screen that opens, select the output format which you prefer, the name you want to assign to the final file and the position on your computer where you want to store it, finally click the button Save.

DocsPal (Online)

To convert ODT files, you can also consider relying on the use of DocsPal, which is great online service fit for purpose.

It is, in fact, a tool that can be used by any browser and operating system, without having to download absolutely anything on the computer, which allows you to convert all the main formats of digital documents, multimedia files and more. Using it is child's play and completely free.

The only thing you need to take into account is that it has an upload limit of 50MB at a time and only allows you to convert 5 at a time. The files are kept on servers for up to 5 days, after which they are deleted, so the user's privacy should be guaranteed.

To use the service, visit its home page and drag the ODT file you want to convert onto it. Alternatively, click on the button Browse the file che trovi in ​​corrispondenza della sezione 1 step and select the document "manually". If your file is online, you can also download it directly from the web by typing its URL in the field Enter the URL of the file.
